Unhappy i have a problem

i just got beat by a stock 97 z28 camaro. i have ansa exhuast and that is it on a 85 928. i took the muffler off the ansa system when i raced him. the car sound amazingly well. but it doesnt nessesarly feel as fast. could this be true. and what can do. i am imbearassed. and yes i can drive. i dont want to go to the extreme of superharging or stroking. i just dont got that much money. and headers suck beacause they cost $1000 for an 85. i know they help greatly though. let me know what i can do.

The stock 97 camaro has the same specs. as your 85.
Camaro has 285 HP and 0-60 in 5.9sec. Car weight is 3591.
Your 85 has 288HP and 0-62 in 6.3sec. Weight is 3361.
FYI-the SS camaro makes 300hp.

So removing the muffler may have cost you HP.
Why don't you take it to the track and then you can "race" him.

There are to many factors in "street" racing.

Hey, getting beat by a car 12 years junior of your 85 isn't bad. There are plenty of cars today that can out run my 86. But as John928 implied, it is the handling that really shines on the 928 as well as doing it in comfort and luxury.

yeah you have to remind your self your car is about 20 years old.
you still can out out corner him and most likely out break him. he would be toast on twisty roads. your car out styles him too.
Do you have Performance chips? or a K&N air filter ...these are fairly inexpensive up-grades. Do you have and automatic or manual?..if you have an automatic remeber the mercedes-benz made tranny is set up to start in 2nd gear if you take off with the shifter in "D". this could cost you a few seconds.

Never wrestle with a pig, you both get dirty and the pig enjoys it.

Drag racing a Camaro is doing what a Camaro does best. The 928 is not geared, nor designed for, nor intended for drag racing. It is intended to maintain unbelievable high speeds on the Autobahn for long periods of time. Try that with a Camaro and see which one smokes to a stop with a seized motor.

It is also intended for rapid transit grand touring at the highest level. Want a faster 928, then get a 350-hp version. My advice is to be happy with what you have, and forget about trying to turn a European throughbred into a drag racer.

Also, with that rear axle on a Camaro, I wouldn't necessarily want to run one down the country roads too fast. Sure it's done every day, the trailer park guys love em, but that doesn't mean they're fast. It just means they're dangerous.

Amen mr. P.

These comparisons are like apples to oranges, or more accurately oranges (928) to "orange drink" (Camaro). A 928 is the best car Porsche built during that time, and a mustang/camaro/vette is built no better than a chevette/nova/crown victoria. Some of the parts are bigger, that's all. Shiny junk.

Don't get me started.

928's are classic.

I HAVE AND 83 EURO. w/WATER INJECTION KIT. MY COUSIN HAS A 350Z AND HANDED HIM IS A$$ FROM A 40MPH ROLL TO XXMPH.
I'M RETTY SURE A 350Z IS JUST AS FAST AS A 97 CAMARO. DID EVEN HAVE TO PUSH THE LAUGHING GAS. sorry for caps. but i don't go around picking fights with pony cars from stop light to stop light. if i'm doing the speed limit in the 3rd lane and so guy is riding my tail. take off to get out of his way as soon as possible. and if i happen to pull a few car lengths on in the process than thats not my fault. lol bawwwwwwwwwwwwwwah see lata

The answer is probably "no". Mark and Susan at DEVEK have made awesome mods to their car, but in order for them to break the 200-mph barrier they wouldn't be going to the 4.11 gears. The transaxle is not something that you can find those kind of gears to fit, either. The 928 is a high speed machine, not a drag racer.

Having said that, I have a fellow '83 928 friend, who has my identical car except his is an auto, but with some other mods, and he drag races his '83 with amazing success. You can find him here, and just address a post to him and you'll get some very good info. http://members3.boardhost.com/928s4vr/

regards, P

There were a few custom 5 speed shafts made by a company in Canada. They were 3.09. Makes 1st almost useless, unless your trying to wipe out the tires

The pinions part of the gear set shaft. The custom piece runs around $2500.00 (many years ago) plus installation, which is a complete transmission rebuild.
