I haven't experienced the same thing but have a 79 and noticed it has 2 fuel pumps, internal and external. I wonder what would happen if the silly little internal one was bad, maybe the volume would be drastically reduced possibly? Just a guess, a fuel volume delivery test might be in order.

yep, and that's where it gets tricky. the car has had the fuel tank replaced at one time. whoever did the work put in a single-pump tank. there is still enough fuel pressure at the front, but I wonder...

Jim Bailey says CIS troubleshooting starts with fuel pressures, check them, then find out what is making them wrong.

I don't want to be too simple but have you checked the fuel filter. I am not very knowledgeable about cis but its a start!

Checked the idea of a clogged cat converter? If your car has one. Its some of my ideas for you.

thanks for all the ideas. don't worry about being too simple. I had all those issues straight before asking you guys, but it doesn't hurt to double check to ensure proper diagnosis

we've made some progress. after further digging, a large part of it turned out to be a faulty distributor. now there is still an small issue with the fuel distributor. we'll see how that goes...
