Build quality before and after 1987 model year?

My shopping experience so far hasn't really turned up ANY pre 1987 928's in as nice of condition as some, maybe the top 5%, of 1987 and newer 928's.

Do you agree, or have I just not gotten around enough? (I'm talking about cars I have had a look at, pictures I don't trust much anymore).

Do you think there are any build quality issues?

Maybe the higher resale price forced owners into better PM?

Maybe the difference that 10 years makes, 20 years old vs 30 years old?

Maybe the lower resale price is keeping owners of NICE early cars from selling?

BTW it isn't lost on me how nice a fairly rough 928 can be made to look with a really good detail, so maybe some of the nicer 87+ look better than they will after a month or two of normal ownership.
