Only learning by doing
I've been thinking about and researching camshafts since I got reignited about the 928 a year or so ago, but last night is the first time I pulled a cam tower off a motor. I've wandered around several shops with 928 motors apart, but it never clicked in my brain until I saw it right in front of me, that on a 16v motor at least the cam goes in from the end, and the cam tower doesn't really "open".
Explains a lot of the restrictions on the lobe profiles, people kept telling me it was because they had to fit through the cam bearing journals, now it makes sense. |

Not going there.
![]() I may take off the end cap to check the grind number, but it would go back on, and the cams will stay in the towers until good reason exists to remove them. Originally I kept the cams to use as cores if I decided to try a hotter than Euro S profile via welding. If I end up selling them I will likely ship them in the towers. |

Ah yes, found this out when I pulled one of my Euro heads off my 16V. I was expecting a valve cover to come off. I'm not even going to attempt to remove the cam. It becomes all downhill from there. At least for me it will.
