tach swap and correction between single and double coil 928's
86 US brains in an 83, tach is only reading half the real rpm, is there some kind of correction or change needed to the tach or LH?
I figure its some kind single vs dual coil thing, but no clue on the fix other than a pod swap. |

your tach needs to read 4 cylinder mode.......

How does that work?

on an aftermarket tach, there will be a switch for 4,6,8 cylinder mode.
on the 928 tach, I don't think there is one, but it has been discussed previously. Alan (the electronic guru) would know for sure....? -R |

did you swap the dual distributor tach into the single distributor car, and not use the dual dizzy? or is this just a brain change?
what parts are you using, specifically? |

82 Weissach gets a Euro hybrid motor, dual dist, US 86 LH 2.2 brains. Stock 82 pod now shows the tach at half rpm.

I found an old thread about pod swaps between single and dual coil model years, but two solutions mentioned were send out the instrument cluster or a "adapter". I was kind of hoping for a jumper setting or something.

your parts list would lead me to say use the single distributor with the US pod /brain box......
I never really saw a need for twin dist, but they are there in the later Euro's. Keep it simple, avoid mixing up stuff if you can..... if you're looking for something really exotic, put a crank trigger system on it. (just kidding) |

Looking for the simplest working system, AFAIK that is using 85/86 US brains and wiring, and that requires the twin coil, twin distributor setup. Engine is a later Euro S2 already using LH 2.2, just originally the Euro version with no O2 circuit. The basic swap to US brains works very well, this tach thing at worst is a minor issue fixed with a tach swap or sending the cluster out for calibration.
The Chevy swap guys run into this same issue on 928's, but nobody seems to be publishing the details on how to change the tach, just advertising the service for $50 or $100. I've got a spare Euro S2 (dual dist) pod, but it would be nice to keep the Weissach as original as possible. *** Single dist means L instead of LH and no MAF, and no tuning ability. |
