Which timing belt are you using and why?
My 85 Euro 5 spd has a Porsche timing belt, and my 83 US 5 spd just got a Flennor. Purpose of this thread is a summary of the belts available and any comments related to them. Early up to I think Sept of 1981 928 used a square tooth belt, but many of those have been converted and all newer use a round HTD (high torque design). All listed below are "I think" HTD, prices were what turned up in a web search.

My 84 and 86 have rounded teeth, both conti, was about $42 ea.
Will be monitoring a couple times per year, retensioning as rqd. Would have preferred $100 porsche original belt that is recommended by some for longevity / stretch resistance, but have a budget, and conflicting opinions exist on the value of the original.. Will check frequently the conti units.

I didn't realize how expensive the Porsche belt is, about $120 I think, until it was already on, so this last time I was determined to plan ahead (and didn't). Zeus+ used a Gates, and generally I think they make the best timing belts, but I couldn't find one same day local. I've been told the Conti stretches, and got a last minute positive review of the Flennor which I had never heard of before, so gave it a shot.
Gates makes a really nice looking new blue belt, but I haven't seen it for the 928 yet. |

Mine is a "Contitech" belt. For some reason I was under the impression that this was the OEM belt, though I cannot reference that anywhere. It might be over on Rennlist, but I refuse to patronize that website and its' silly managers.
Does anyone have any hard proof that one of the "other" belts is any worse? I suspect they are all the same. Just change them every 45k miles and there is little difference in performance from one brand to the other. N |

I suspect belts have a similar amount of variation as tires do from brand to brand.

Gates, Contitech and Flennor are all OEM.
I sell 100's of the Contitech later style and never had any issues with this so called stretch. I sell Gates for the older style - made in the US - and again no issues. Sold about 2 Porsche belts in 3 years because nobody wants to pay the $100+ price tag for a Porsche tagged Contitech belt.

I use the OE Porsche belt, its a Gates and think it I paid $85ish for it last year

Gates was the original, original supplier, AFAIK. Purolator was the original filter supplier.
The 1" 928 belt is not very wide, and it has an unusual teeth spacing, compared to modern belts, which are upwards of 1¼", and have metric spacing. Perhaps because the 928 belt was spec'd back in 1972? 3/8" or L/light pitch (double roller chain pitch)
