Engine temperature problems in 928S4
This is my introduction. Can anyone help me?
I have a porsche 928 S4 Club Sport 1988 5 gears manual. The car is experiencing the following problem. When it is cold, and I start the engine, the temperature rises until approx. 2 to 3 mm. from the red mark. Then one of the fans starts running and also the flaps open,and so, the temperature reduce quickly. then the flaps close and the fan stops. The temperature starts to rise again but this time neither the fan nor the flaps open and the temperature goes to red. I have done all the measurements that the manual suggest to check and everything is between the limits. (The only thing I'm not sure is the values of the resistence according the coolant temperature, because I don't have an accurate thermometer). Any Ideas? Thanks. ![]() |

Are you sure you have a Club Sport?
Last four digits of the VIN would be I think in the range 5061 to 5070. I would check the fan electrical system, make sure all the connections are clean and in good shape, test that both fans operate correctly, and swap the fan controller with a known good unit. Maybe starting with a check of all the temperature sensors (somebody will post the details on that). |

Sorry, but I am spanish- What does VIN stand for?
The engine number is M28.41 81J0178 SP, and according to the workshop manuals it is a Club Sport. I've checked the fans connecting them directly to the battery. OK. I've also checked the four sensors and their values are fine. Do you mean a new control unit (the one that is next to the passenger seat)?. I have changed the belt for the AC compressor and also the belt was a special length, because the compressor is a bit smaller than the regular one. On the other hand, I haven't filled the circuit with AC gas yet. Could it be the reason for my problem? Thanks. ![]() |

VIN is the vehicle identification number, stamped in the top of the right fender, on US cars its also on a sticker in the door jam.
M28/41 is correct for all 87/89 5 spd motors, not sure about the rest. Control unit is up by the bumper on the other side of the hood latch from the ignition module. Its item 10 in this parts diagram. http://dcauto.gotdns.com/illustration/index/463715658 ![]() Be sure to check and clean all the wires and connectors related to the fans and fan control module. Don't run the compressor without first pulling a strong vacuum for at least 30 min to remove moisture, replacing the receiver dryer, and refilling with oil and freon. If you put on a belt, disconnect the electrical line to the clutch. It should have no effect. |

On top of everything that Danglerb has suggested. If only one fan is running I am going to guess its the controller on the front as already stated.
If both fans run when powered by a direct supply then a new controller is in order. Double check the fuses and make sure both or one is not melted in any way. A common problem on the later cars. Congrats on having one of the most special 928's Roger@************

You could unplug the flap at the open position. You can't go that fast in US to make a difference any way.

I had a problem with only one cooling fan running on my '89 S4 when I got it.
It turned out to be the cooling flaps relay - relay XVIII on your '88's electric panel. In my case, pulling the relay out, cleaning the contacts and putting it back in fixed the behaviour. Hilton. PS nice 928! ![]() Quote:

Hello,
Could you please indicate your car chassis number (VIN: Vehicle Identification Number)? If your car is a LHD, then it can only be a 1988 Club-Sport and the chassis number must be wp0zzz92zJs845061 to 5070. If it's a RHD, it is an SE (UK version, a little heavier and more "common" with 42 produced). I own the second of the seven 1989 Club-Sport made and try to register these cars. Where are you located in Spain? I have friends there that may help you. Thanks in advance, Samuel |

There was one delivered in Autria (still in this country) and another in France (still there too). The remaining cars were delivered in Germany. Check your fuses. If one fan is running it could be that one of them keeps blowing. If that is the case you need to run an out board fuse holder off the central electric panel for better cooling.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. I am working my way through them!
The VIN is WPOZZZ92ZJS841828 and the car is RHD as I bought it in the UK last year. At the start I didn't know the model of the car but, after reading the workshop manual in section 15-139 I saw the first reference to the suffix "SP" so I assumed it was a Club Sport as that section says. On the other hand , I don't know what "SE" means. I live in Bilbao in Northern Spain and any local contacts are very welcome. |

Not sure if these have the viscous clutch type fans of the early 928s but i had an overheating problem on mine, and it turned out the clutches inside the fan were shot. I actually welded the fan for a temp fix and it kept the temp down

After checking all sensors and trying all those suggestion given, I finally changed the control unit 928 618 418 00 and PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!
