RS Spyder engine, Dec. Excellence.

On page 143. Very strong family resemblance to the 928 32 valve engine.

How'd that happen ?

Is this the new direct injection engine? Pics of it have been featured in some other mags too with the injection feature being prominant.

I've been fascinated by the oil(?) structure on top of all things. It reminds me of the oil fill/seperator of an early 928 which is one of the best seperators ever fitted to an engine IMO. I don't know what's going on in the Spyder but I'm curious about what that is and how it works with the dry sump.
Another interesting feature is the belt driving the alternator.

Ummmm, why are the headers pointing outwards?

two important questions:

what's driving the cams?

why are we trying to build big inch motors given the 3.4L's performance numbers?

as I know nothing about this engine, my first impression is that there ain't no 928 timing belt in it, and the HP numbers would be nice to have (out of our lowly 928 engines)......

Real race engines have gear driven cams. You're building big inch motors because it's a lot easier than trying to make a big inch motor rev to 12,000 rpm. A timing belt won't live through that, the oiling system probably wont handle it either. The headers go out the side because that's the shortest route to the outside of the car.

Ah yes, I wasn't thinking it was race engine. Makes sense.
