OT: Anyone own a Cayenne need some measurements

I asked a couple general questions over on the Cayenne forum here and the List. I was attacked on both forums by a bunch of latte drinking warrantee weenies.

If anyone here has one I could use a couple measurements. Length, height, width of the engine. Length is the most important.

TIA

Pretty funny, I also saw your post on the other forum, including the apparent post as another ID. Seems like the Cayenne owners think technical knowledge is knowing that it has an engine, anything beyond that apparently is to be left to Porsche.

The irony is that they are in a technical forums. Perhaps it is so they can tell their friends, "I own a Cayenne AND spend time in a technical forum about it".

Basically they need to get lives.

Hi Stan,

Actually the other Rich is my friend Rich Towle from Mass. We have been kicking a can back and forth for a while now about how cool the modern version of the 928 engine is. We both have an interest in physical size and complications involving electrical systems that make that thing tick. I thought if asked a couple entry level questions I may root out one or two tech's in a sea of accessory wearing no nothings.

I have no use for people like them. I share what I know and I actually like people. But get in my face for no reason and I will step forward not back.

I guess I need to get a life too. But I happen to dig cars and building crazy stuff no one else has.

BTW: The pistons are working out great. I've had the car to Hershey this year already and I'm leaving for So Cal Next wednesday. Anyone in the area that wants to see my creation and meet me and my better half stop over. It looks like we will have around 40 914's from all over the country.

We are attending "The Howard Dranow Memorial West Coast Ramble" Here's a link for details.

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=92868

We will be at the following:

May 15th and 16th: Double Tree Inn (Irvine)
90 Pacifica, Irvine CA 92618

Then the event moves to:

May 17th: Inn of Lancaster
44131 Sierra Hwy., Lancaster CA 93534

We spend Monday the 18th at the Streets of Willow for a track day!

I am on the wrong coast, otherwise I would love to see your car.

I agree with your thoughts. If I think I have something to offer, then I try. In their case, it seems they feel the need to put someone down who asked a few simple questions. If they had the answers, they wouldn't need to put someone down...

I know there was a brief discussion quite a while back about whether a Cayenne motor could be put in a 928, and the initial thought was that it was too tall. I don't know that anyone had measurements though.

I found some great photos of the block last night. It looks tall. But my friend Rich is building a crazy 914 so height won't be an issue for him. He's tall than me so length could become a problem.

why porsche made suv anyway profit can rip it up like no other off road but face it there selling them to grocery shoppers and errand runners. and putting people into porsche that have no clue about porsche they just dont know, its porsche who has manufactured these to make more money for there race cars thats a good thing vs going out of business or being sold out to american car co. totally meaningless to porsche and they would prob have survived anyway than downing the porsche name to a suv. Just that people hype and attention to that first place that make all do ridiculous things.

not to bash a site to site but if porsche dont even know i wouldnt expect any one else too.

best thing going on with those suv porsches is to rip out all the engs and get them back into cars my opinion. every maker makes a suv theres plenty out there porsche dont need to fall claim to any. blame the ceo bean counter over there at porsche the people are just buying what they know a suv to be albeit a really nice one not that theyd know or care, its a suv to them.

Hey, thats my coast. I have no idea what my wife has planned for me to do (she will tell me when I need to know), and I haven't looked over the link for details, but I just might be able to take a look at the alien.

You should post something on the Socal928 forum in my sig.

Porsche engineers that build the cars would know the dimensions, from that point, until the "hot rodder" like Rich 99.99% of the people don't know, or care. I have dealt with many 928s and don't know the dimensions of the components (though I have many laying around to measure). It isn't a knock for people not to know it, their responses were such that they acted like a secret society about the information, but they are simply a** for treating Rich like that, or they know nothing and want to pretend they know more (but are still the same a** for their behaviour).

So, when someone like Rich gets one to do something with, then the knowledge Rich wants will be known. Rich was hoping there was someone who at least dealt with a wrecked Cayenne would might have, or be able to get the information.

Life is short, why go around looking for reasons to bash people..

With the changes in our society there will be more tension and this might be a small segment of it.

On one side you have people being told the "haves" are being greedy in not sharing their property (earnings), and perhaps they have utilized a corrupt and broken system for their own personal gain (ie: the play the "game" of business to "win" based on the rules in place and the rules enforced... )

On the other side you have people are seeing the working hard, and long, to be successful may not result in the same quality of life they hoped for. They begin to realize that their time, being used in other non-producing ways, is a better choice.

Ever read Atlas Shrugged... what is happening in nothing less than tragic.

Oops, just a bit off topic there

This whole thread is off topic. Not to worry. I'm over it. I have no time for those guys.

I'd go to the dealer and measure an engine myself but the closest one is 180 miles away. Cayennes are worth so much yet that their hard to total. So Salvage engines are not plentiful yet. There will be a day when you can call a Porsche dismantler and get one shipped the same day but not yet.

I hear what your saying Stan. I feel like I'm watching a train wreck and have no way of stopping it. (I say no more for fear of reprisal)

if you're thinking of putting a Cayenne engine in a 928 forget it, won't work
if you really want the dimensions call a dismantler, they'll have one that's actually out of the vehicle

I'm not too sure I'd be willing to say it absolutely won't work yet... I'd be willing to bet I could fit one in a 928.

And I have tried a couple dismantlers that list them. They are glad to allow you to come in and measure the thing yourself but they are not going to send someone into the engine rack with a measuring tape for free. The closest engine I found is 800 miles away. That a long way to go just to size the thing up.

you can ebay porsche cayenne engine theres couple selling already out maybe can measure for ya. cant be of much help theres half dozen yrs, models, turbos, hps, this that and the other thing about the eng dont know what your interest is or skill level or plain english "crazy factor"
kiddin im sure the 500hp turbo 10grand engine should bolt in nicely on a mid eng 914. just make sure that 914 door locks you in case ur hands slip of the steering wheel while your foots on the gas pedal. or have a parachute packed.

could look around there in ebay for whole salvage cayenne projects/parts and ask got to be a page in someones manual they could open and take pic or tell u, if those mesurements are given may just have the cubic inches am i close bout 193.2 cu inches

anything is "possible" with enough ingenuity and money, and I know what you're capable of
this one is quite a bit more of a project than you think
we get a Cayenne in at least once a week, I should be able to get some measurements for you if you really want to attempt this

Cool, I found all sorts of photos of the engine dressed, exposed in cut-away, and raw block form but no real way to get dimensions.

Thanks, I'll be waiting.

Those are long blocks w/o intakes, ecu, harnesses etc.

did an oil change on an '08 S today, engine is 30" long and 28" wide
length does not include fan or bell housing, so I'd add another 4" forward, not sure about the back side, I'll need one that's not hot so I can actually get my hands in it
