Recommend not leaving wife's birthday party to pick up compressor...... unless you don't mind sleeping with Cecil.

Ok, for those not knowing. My Chocolate Lab is named Cecil. Just wanted to throw that out there.

I guess it all depends what time you guys show as I might already have way too much Tequila in me to drive anyways.

Maybe too late for you this time but not too late for next time.

Whenever you add oil to your system, it will try to find its way to the compressor via the low pressure line and gravity. Not too bad if the unit is running but can be death if you do the warm-hands charge with no engine run. No matter. When you add oil, take the time to rotate the compressor BY HAND a few times to make sure that the compressor isn't hyrolocked by the oil. Remember that PAG and mineral oil don't get along, PAG and R-12 don't get along. Points me away from using PAG, except that it's real easy to find PAG oil charges at consumer parts places. OK, it still points me away.

Check the HP hose at the compressor connection and see if there's ANY grey there. That would be grey aluminum powder. A grain or two there is enough to clue you that more has gone into the condenser. Not a bad idea to pull and solvent flush the condenser out of the car. There are a few DIY instructions, but the Most Important thing to remeber is that you need to get all the metal, all the oil, and all the flush solvent out completely before you install. I've heard of folks filling the thing with paint thinner and blowing it through with compressed air. I've seen froth-flush apparatus with detergent and water that have much higher velocity than a pure liquid flush, great for the third or fourth flush. You can use anhydrous alcohol , or even acetone to do the last flush, to get any stray solvent and water gone

Don't want to hijack - but Dr Bob, do you know how much R12 is needed to charge an empty system?

I don't know off the top of my head. There should be a sticker on top of the radiator shell that tells you what and how much to put in. The actaul fill qtys are in the WSM. Does your car have rear air?

psychII had figured out the capacity to put in. Heres a quote from his post.

Quote:
from what I've been reading, 134 capacity should be about 80% of the R-12. So, I guess you should only put in about 30 oz or so. If you put in 2 cans, that's only 24. You should be able to get a half can in.

Thanks for the nice words, Leo.
Good luck on the compressor - i'll be pulling mine on monday to put the new hose on, then vacuum down to purge, charge and test - so we are about in sync right now !
