Crud Under the Air Guide Housing

I've been trying to work on my '78 Euro, and clean up dirt and debris from the motor. It looked like in the center of the block there was a pool of motor oil, so I was trying to clean it out with rags. What I'm seeing is it looks like gas is leaking out of the bottom of something, and from under the Air Guide Housing-the thing all the CIS sits on top of. The seals on the CIS (distributor?) look fine and I don't see any fluid coming from that. So what does the air guide housing do? Where would all this be coming from? Checking diagrams I cannot find any sort of seal that would be there. And would there be any reason coolant, gas and oil mix here?

Sure, previous owner hammered off Gin and Juice and trying to pour Oil in the Oil Filler and then trying to add Coolant in the Coolant Filler still hammered, thus both liquids pooling in the Engine Valley.

Seriously, just clean it out and watch and see if it returns after you drive it.

If any car can drive someone to drink, it might be this one! I'll try to thoroughly clean the engine valley, maybe it holds more liquid than I thought!

It might be a while on the driving part, still hashing out electrical issues and need to flush out the fuel lines, etc. I noticed on the CIS distributor the word "BAD" etched onto it-hmm, did they forget to add "a$$"?

It might be good if you just yank out all the Spider and CIS Stuff. It's not hard to do and it will give you an easy way to clean out the Valley. Then you can really inspect the whole body of the CIS System. Once the Spider is off, it really just lifts right out. Also, all those small hoses can be replaced easily too. Let's hope that on your CIS Distributor it actually says "Bad to the Bone!"

BAD is the oem manufacturer for CI$ parts.

If you loosen all the screw clamps on the rubber couplers you can slide them down on the tubes a bit and remove the intake body, then the throttle and U tube. Only way to get the valley clean and/or find the source of the leaks, often breather hoses etc.

I didn't think about that. That would get you away from replacing the 8 Gaskets on the Intake Tubes, but then again, those gaskets are cheap and you'll have more room to work. And that also will work if those 30 year old rubber couplers survive the push down the spider tubes. You gots choices my man.

I was thinking of removing the spider. All the small metal tubes seem a little intimidating, but I'd like to make sure the injectors aren't clogged with old gas. The stuff that came out of the tank was yellow, not brown, but still clear. To put the spider arms back on, I'd have to get a whole bunch of gaskets, right? I think at least one 928 site has a kit for that...

I bought these from eBay when i was working on my engine. They are quality. $15 a set.

Porsche 928 Intake Manifold Gasket Set 1978-1984:eBay Motors (item 180207859354 end time Jan-06-10 07:49:03 PST)

Leave your Injectors in the Tubes, unless you plan replacing them. If you remove the Injectors, you will need the seals and most likely the Aluminum Piece that holds the Injectors/Seals in place. I put Carb Cleaner in the Injector and let it sit for an hour, then used a compressor and blew it out. You can then see the spray pattern by doing this method.

Ah! I will try removing the spider that way, then at least I won't have to worry about gaskets for a while. Is it possible to pull off the CIS distributor and lines without removing the spider legs?

I'll have to remember that when I'm part searching!

The spider will have to come off to remove the lower plenum and distributor. Also, check the rubber boots that connect the spider arms to the upper plenum. They have been known to crack on the bottom due to oil residue in the intake.

Hence, why I say remove it all. Your gonna have to replace most, if not all, the rubber in there anyways. You can replace the Couplers with Stock Rubber or go Silicone and it will never Dry or Crack like Rubber.

I remember seeing those cool blue silicon ones as well-my car is supposed to be Oak Green Metallic (where applicable) and was thinking of getting some green ones, if I can find them.

Also, I've seen those replacement gaskets on a couple other sites, but that ebay seller's price is very good! Itchin' to get working on the car!

Here you go Neil. I just cut them down to size very carefully with an Exacto Knife.

Hey, I found that Pelican has the same gaskets for $1.25 each-good to know.

Pelican Parts - Product Information: 928-110-330-03-M17)

When you say leave the injectors in the tubes, can the tubes be removed without taking the injector out? Can the the tubes also be removed from the CIS distributor without losing a bunch of small parts?

Yes, tubes "can" be removed with injectors still in.
