Pulling radio problem 86 928S

I have the original Monteray in the 928S but the FM is out and I want to replace the unit with a newer one or repair the original.

I purchased the removal tools, inserted them but the darn radio will not come out. It seems stuck. Should I shoot some PB Blaster in the holes? Did Porsche do something else to keep the radio from being removed? I am afraid to try and pry the radio out and don't want to damage the dash/console in doing so.

Pull those side panels under your center console and then you have access to the rear of the radio. Some radios get bolted down with a strap to the back.

chances are the rear mount is just a slide in part. the sides of the radio are probably still holding the radio
Do as Dano said and remove the side panels of the console

Thanks will do. It felt like it was not going to move. I had bought the removal tool kit, slid the wire tools in those front holes, felt them sort of click but the darn thing will not pull out. So I will remove the side panels and see behind it.

What did those tools look like. My 928 never had a radio, but in my Expedition, I just used a metal hanger and bent them to fit in the holes. Unless the Blaupunkt had something different. Either way, your on the right track.

I got the tools at Walmart $4.50 in car radio section. It's for the DIN (German) standard with the four small holes, two on each side of the front radio panel. They supplied two types, one is the U shaped with little hooks on the end. You push one in on each side of the radio and then suppose to release the catch in back and pull out the radio with the tools. The other was for some kind of slot on bottom of the radio but not for mine. These were flat types, like keys.

I tried wires but that didn't work so I got the special tools but still a no go. Will look into removing a side panel, unfortunately.

I have found that once the tools are inserted you need to pry sideways while pulling out at the same time. The prying releases the locking tabs that hold the radio into the mounting sleeve. Sorry, but can't remember for sure which way to pry, only two choices though!

Guys, I got the radio out. You do need those tools or wire, what ever. I took off the one side panel and found 4 dead mice in there! I knew there had been some mice in the car. I cleaned out the petrified bodies and all the debris they put in under and around the radio. I did not see any wire damage. The old Monterrey radio is out. It did need a push from the back which I could do once the side panel was off and tools inserted in the front of the radio. Now to look for a replacement radio, maybe a HD radio with all new features and CD instead of tape. My old one did not have FM working and not worth fixing, but I will keep it as original with the car.

My three music sources are;

FM
CD with burned collections of MP3's.
USB thumb drive that fits in the front panel of my JVC with 2GB of MP3's.

HD seems like a gimmicky text thing, not really music related, titles and ads, but I haven't looked into it much.

Yeah, don't bother with your stock one. Get a nice updated one that matches your interior lights. Mine is an Alpine that displays mostly Blue since most of my lights are now Blue LEDs. Make sure you also can hook up an iPod since Cd's are mostly out. Mine also supports XM.

Nice install. I have been looking at new Blaupunkt but they don't seem to have the features like yours. Is it worth it keeping it all German? I am going to look at some radios later this evening. Do died in the wool Porsche fans wants Blaupunkt's in the cars??

Forget what everyone else thinks. I also looked in Blaus but their stuff sucks compared to Alpine and Kenwoods. Get what "YOU" like, not what others like and think. Your the one stuck with it. I would get the best your budget allows.

You are right on that. I am actually looking at Alpine and a few others with Blue tooth, HD, etc., USB , Ipod ports. Will let you know what I got.

I have been looking at several different replacement radios. One is a Jensen VM8013 which has a little screen and plays DVD has many outputs but no Bluetooth. It has ability for connection larger screens and rear camers, etc. What I like is, it does not have all the glitter on the front panel, looks mostly black. A lot of these new ones look cheap to me, too much chrome cheap knobs.

Another one which looks good to me is the Eclipse CD5030, has Bluetooth and many features.

I did notice some radios do require removal of the rear support bracket in the car. Not sure I like that idea.

I am not going to install any 1,000 watt super bass units, I just want a decent radio and use existing 928S speakers.

Looks good, however, won't that screen hide the comfort controls in the car? Seems with that big screen it will. The other JVC looks interesting and will check it out. But JVC is not a high end stereo company in my opinion either.

I am still looking, but Eclipse I don't think is junk! I mean I was looking at Alpine and some of their stuff looks cheap. Like I said, I actually like the looks of the stock Blaupunkt, clean, neat, no chrome junk looking knobs. I could have the Monteray fixed, but I think something with newer features might do the job.

Actually, here's a 3rd Party Opinion. And yup, JVC is there, but so is Clarion. Another brand I wouldn't put in any of my cars. Seriously, to each is own. If an Eclipse stereo is what you want in your 928, then so be it. Only you know what You like. Heres that article on the Auto Stereos mostly bought.
