exciter wire terminal?
Okay, correct me if I'm wrong. Bolting the alternator up creates the ground; that leaves 2 wires hanging down, the fat hot wire, and the skinny exciter wire.
So, which terminal on the alternator does the skinny wire go to? #1 or #2? ![]()

Forgot to number the terminals on the pic. #1 is on top, #2 on the bottom, of the lung-shaped disk on the left.

Really hard to hurt anything hooked up wrong cause of the diodes but.
The blue wire looks like it feeds the coil. I would say that is the excitor post. Check with a Volt Meter but 1 and 2 may be the same.

Weird how your car is just 1 year later than mine and it has a totally different Alternator. I also ended up bumping up my Alternator to a 120 Amp.

Dano- I have the Paris-Rhone and you have the Bosch. Could that be why they look different?

Yup, that be why. Pretty easy to figure out which wire goes where on my Alt. Not sure about Exiter Wire to 1 or 2 on yours, but I agree with Vdub as it looks like they are the same from your pic. Hopefully someone with a Paris Alt can chime in to make sure.

B+ is battery hookup-- 61 is exciter--D- is ground(but no wire) From your picture it looks like a D is stamped on the yellow wire side-a B on the blue wire side. Can't see the top. Look for a 61 stamp then you will be good to go. Hope this helps.

Woo-hoo, found the answer to my question. It is #1, the one at the top. It took some searching, but I came across this thread. This Sharkskin site is pretty awesome - tons of pics. And his car is an OB, so that helps a lot because a lot of the info I find when searching for answers are for later models.

jstobo - thanks for the reply. I found the answer to my question, but I still looked for "61" just because. My alternator does not have a 61 anywhere, but no worries.
Now, on the sharskin site he says that the cooling shroud is pretty much a necessity to keep the diodes cool. I don't have one; could this be what caused my old alternator to fail (it only had 200 miles on it, maybe)? Or was it the fact that that my exciter wire circuitry was / is not working and I had to rev the engine up every time I drove it to get the alt. to self-excite?
