Uniroyal Timing belt

Well, I took the covers off the T-belt on my 1986, 928S with 38,000 original miles.

The old belt looks so new the manufactures Name and numbers are clear to read on the back side of the belt. It says, Uniroyal Power Grip HTD with the numbers DBP 1957922. Does anyone have any idea how old the belt is??

Is it possible the belt was replaced in 1992? I know the owner did not drive it much since then. I know time has lapsed, but the darn thing looks so good.

I already bought a Gates belt and Laso pump.

Is the 1986 an Interference Engine?

Then I wouldn't trust it then. If it was done in 1992, the the rubber is 18 years old. If that breaks, your engine is toast. Valves crashing on your pistons is not worth not knowing. Just replace it and document it, so you know when it has been done.

Yes, I am going to replace it. I was just wondering if that was the belt used at the factory. I worked a few hours on the car yesterday, taking my time, keeping things organized. Will put a few hours on it today. I am cleaning parts as I go, although they are pretty clean. I am putting parts on my work bench in order as removed. I can see with this car the thing to do is go slow, not force things. I noticed one bolt was missing on the right side cover in center. Will need to replace it. Rotors and caps look good, just a little cleaning maybe. Wires are stock and look fine. I know the plugs were replaced at 30K miles. I am putting PB Blaster on all bolts before I attempt to remove.

Yes, I plan on taking pictures and will post some. Good documentation as well!

I have just got the belt tensioner gauge tool. I think I will see what the old belt is set at just for practice before I take it off.

The center bolt on the drivers side cam cover is a special one, not your avearge bolt.

Fred may be referring to the lower cover bolt as its a longer bolt IIRC its a 6 X 73 this goes into the timing belt cover then into one of the bolt holes for the water pump.
When you get the old pump off, go to ACE and get a new set of waterpump bolts and washers including the longer timing cover bolt.
Use either antiseize or my favorite Loctite PTFE pipe sealant on the WP bolts this will keep any liquids from oozing into the bolt holes and corroding them.
Replace the tensioner boot and block gasket, and use STP in a visene bottle to refill it from the hole closest to the passenger fender, do this with both bleeder nipples removed from the tensioner

Great ideas. Remember, my car has only 38,000 miles on it, this is not something that has been driven much since 1992. This is basically a "new" 1986 believe me!! You would have to see this car to understand what I have here. But I certainly will go through everything. The paint on my car is "show room", original!!

I just checked my "garage" pic's they are still in there. Guess I need to take more. Anyway, I have a lot of "documentation" on the car, it's for real. Hard to believe I know! I now have two new front tires on it and the new JVC radio. Yep it's a real gem!

Geez dude, you getting cranky at your age or something? It's just that you keep mentioning how clean and like new your car is. It's like we don't believe you or something. Although I should have assumed the rest of your car was prestine because the pics of your Center Console was nice

Your car is indeed a rare gem, but not totally unusual as one or two if not more very low mile 928's show up every year, they are NOT however showroom or even safe to drive without many aged parts being replaced. Sitting without being driven has its own unique set of problems, that may show up right away or not until sometime later in the first few thousand miles of driving. Taking it slow is definitely the way to go.

Ok, I just put a few more pictures in the "garage". Ya, people don't believe how clean the car is and keep questioning me, that's all. What I also meant was, the car has not seen all the use that others have had and may not need as much maintenance as one with say over 150K or 200K miles or something. For a car this old you would expect it to have a lot of mileage, that is all I meant. Sure I am excited to own this car.

The bolt I am referring to on an 86 is the bottom bolt that holds the timing belt cover on the cam gear drivers side. It is not one of the two with the alignment tubes. does not go to the water pump either.
It is a short stud in the block and a bolt with a threaded sleeve that screws on to it. As per the parts manual. I used a long piece of all thread 6X1.0 metric and put a nut on it and made a long bolt.

Not near as unusual as you think, but desireable.
These were 3rd and 4th cars for the affluent. Some had the **** beat out of them, others got tucked into the corner of the garage like an old baseball trophy.

We saw an 83 and an 84 this year at Frenzy that had just been liberated with sub-40K.

Then there are the Brunei cars.

And Blue 82. That's a real story. 3500 miles, dentist owner gets mad at the dealer for attempting to rip him off, parks the thing in the back corner of his garage for 26, yes, 26 years.
