Whats it worth? 1985 928s 32v with PPI results
I am trying to find out the value of a car I saw for sale in FLORIDA. Is there a website/source that can give me Book Value?
Here is what I know. 1985 928s 32v Auto 71k Miles Black on Black PPI revealed it has a slight leak in the PS resevoir and needs a front wheel bearing It hasnt had the timing belt replaced yet The outside condition is a 9/10 Inside condition is a 9/10 All electrical works Original radio does not work (needs code) Carfax check is clean Tires all new Service records going back to original owner Last dealer service was at 45k miles 3 owners Whats your guess on its worth? If they are asking $10k is that too high? If they are asking $5k is it a steal. Thanks Last edited by redstormcoach; 11-23-2009 at 05:50 PM.. |

I dunno man, 9/10 is a very high standard there. Do you have pics of this car (in and out)? Auto or Manual? For what your describing, yup 5K would be a killer deal.

my 86.5 from another thread
http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/for-sale-ads-member-to-member-classifieds/534573-for-sale-nice-928s-1986-5-auto.html And a list of work that I completed to give you an idea of what things will probably need to be addressed on your new purchase. If you going to spend 10 K then you should buy mine. If your going to spend 5K then you should buy mine, as you will spend over 5K doing all of the things i have done to my car, But good luck with your purchase

Thanks mrmerlin. I like black better.
Again my post is about my question and not your car. So, does anybody know a source for values? NADA, KBB only go back so far. Here are some pics of the car I am interested in. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thats a good lookin car.
The door stickers are not my favorite but they do give a racy look. I included the list of things i did to my car to give you a guide to the things that will need to be done to the one your considering. If you use it you will have a better understanding of maintenance that will need to be performed. You will absolutely want to replace the fuel lines and the trans cooler lines, as these are fire starters. GLWP

Sure is nice looking. Value is in the eye??
1985 928s 32v Auto 71k Miles last service at 45k (how long ago?) I would be interested in what's under the covers?? Compression, fuel pressure, A/F. Bad bearing on one side? check alignment and inspect that frame is true. Needs to have a Waterpump and timing belt done, to be safe (interference engine). How is the drive-train? Look at Trany oil for heating, Brakes...undercarriage, any crushed side-tubes? Merlin, how did you fix the HVAC knobs? Jon

I already had a PPI done and only two things came up that was needed.
As I said, the car literally needs nothing. So much has been done I just dont want to list all the items like mrmerlin did. What I a looking for is a website or something that says what the value of the car is. Is there anything that says the AVG RETAIL VALUE is $________________. There is no fixed guide to the value of a 928, and this is double true for better than average cars. Better than average cars sell like fish, to the highest current bidder in the market for a better than average fish. I'm not saying this car is exceptional, but it seems like you believe it is perhaps just below exceptional, and if that is correct you should be more concerned about buying it before someone else does than whether it should be $8k or $12k.
Excellent car and great deal rarely combine. Who is going to keep a 928 in excellent condition and then sell it without some idea of its real value? My PPI had a LOT more detail, compression across all the cylinders, two pages of check boxes and values. How experienced was the PPI mechanic with the 928? |

Good points by Danglerb.
The sales prices are all across the spectrum. 85 / Early 86 32V Automatic is not the most widely coveted variety of the species. You should budget $2000 for timing belt / WP and incidentals associated with that job. Bad wheel bearing can easily mean bad spindle on these cars, due to the design. If timing belt wasn't changed by 71,000 miles, then I'd scrutinize the rest of the maintenance as well. Regarding where to look for valuation...Interestingly, its unlikely that anybody in the country watches 85 / 86 values more than the handful of guys you've already engaged here, on Renn and Reutter. Heck, Stan is a master restorer. Danglerb is using the premier 928 race and restore shop in the world to have his cars improved. No place better than here. I'd say on the surface you have it right with your first estimate. I'd lean low-side for several reasons. It would take detail, the story, the closeup photos, the PPI data to get a a better valuation. I'm dubious of car flippers and three of four low resolution glamour shots. Been there, done that. PPI must be done by a 928 specialist in my opinion. The dealerships haven't trained on 928s for over 15 years. I've seen a 12K mile 85 auto change hands at around $13K in the last 6 months. It languished in the mid to high teens for a year. I've also bought an 86 that's very nice with 71K from a retired guy for $2K, before the economy tanked, did the maintenance and tires and am still less than 5 for a car similar to the one you show. The point here is the owner may have very little in the car. Valuing a Honda Accord or a Jeep Wrangler or a Burb, that's one thing. These are insanely complicated and seem particularly subject to being abused and then patch-detailed and flipped. Add the age to it and its clear that a deep dive needs to go on to value them.

Good confirming recommendations.
Try corelating the PPI you had done with this one: PPI Maybe it will help you confirm the value of the PPI you had performed. Obviously, you need to understand how to...compare the two. But, anyone serious about owning and maintaining a SHARK can do this. Jon

I would say a Timing belt job is a MUST as soon as the car is in your hands. Any pics of the engine compartment???
The seats are from a later S4 are they not? If all checks out well this car could very well be in the 10K range...but 3 pics all from the fount is not enough to make a REAL determination on value. |

I make emotional decisions. Chances are you may not find another 86.5 in that condition. I would try to negotiate on price, but that seems like a fair deal to me if the PPI is good (try to get it for closer to 7k)...
Looks very nice form the 3 photo's you supplied. |

so whats the verdict how much are they asking , how much do you want to spend? Is there a middle ground here for both seller and buyer??
Jon to fix the sliders you need to buy new slider knobs and be careful with the little curved metal sliding springs behind the panel. Then the flex light cable plugs into the knob. Note once the knobs are installed they are permanent if you remove them then you need new ones as the tabs will snap off if you try to remove them. Note the HVAC head unit must be removed to replace these parts Dcrasta the car in question is an 85, my car was an 86.5 and i was using it as a reference FYI

This thread is 5 months old. The OP is off posting about the 911 he's dabbling with. There is a high probability the car needed significant maintenance, despite the pretty paint and seemingly nice interior in the decidedly low res pictures. $3K-5K min parts only. At 70K+ miles, they all need mech. refresh. And dealer maint generally has been truncated. Needs timing belt? Then it needs it all.
Just like your's, dcrasta, and mine do, mechanical refresh needed. Though neither of our paint or interiors are as nice as this appears. PPI is worthless unless detailed by a 928'r. I'd be a little lower (theoretically) at $5500: If no other damage revealed, cared for. I'd increase offer with step-ups for work proven complete on stan's list, but not very far. Excellent interior and body would mean a lot if confirmed, though. I get the emotion part, too, for a good, clean specimen. Agreed. Am seeing an amazing number of cars surfacing lately.

Well your welcome glad I could assist you.
For the car its been sold a few months ago, a lucky local owner snapped it up. That said it was a very nice car and with everything working as it should I will miss it , I had to sell it to pay off some debts

Well, I hope you get another 928 some day. I have put about 2,500 miles on mine now and really enjoy driving it. It's taken some driving time away from my Harley but there were days here the weather was better driving the car.
