I just finished removing the passenger side fuel rail and intake tubes and discovered a small pool of what appears to be coolant just behind the cylinder #4 intake valve (valve is closed at the moment). The car was last run 4 weeks ago at which time there was no evidence of a coolant leak anywhere. Anyone have an idea as to how coolant got there? If you look at the picture, you can see a small sliver of light reflecting off the coolant (its just to the left of the center of the valve's stem).

if its #4 cylinder then there is a water outlet adjacent to the intake runner most probable is that the outlet has leaked some coolant and it went into the intake,
remove the spark plug and turn the engine over spray some WD40 into the cylinder and get the engine started as soon as you can

Will replacing the gasket for the water outlet help? It will be awhile before I get the engine running again; I have the crankshaft locked and timing belt removed, and I am also in the process of replacing the fuel injector hoses and cam housing gaskets (they are leaking slightly). Just to clarify, is there any chance that it is a head gasket? Because I really don't want to mess with that right now if I can help it.

Did you check the oil? Any color change in the oil. Make sure there is no coolant in your oil, if so do not run the engine.

Will I be able to see a difference in the oil on the dipstick (oil on dipstick is clean), or should I drain some oil out and inspect it?
On another note, one of the water pump bolts snapped during removal, and there is only 1/16" of thread protruding from the block. I tried removing it with large channel-lock pliers, but there is not enough surface area to get a good grip on the bolt. Does anyone have experience removing these bolts?

In bad cases the oil looks milky. Sounds like you might be OK. On bolt. you can try an "EZ out" . Did you change the water pump? If so, did you use sealer on the gasket?

No I have not installed the new pump yet. One bolt was more rusty than the rest, and snapped off. It looks like an EZ out will be my best bet for removing it (or drilling if that doesn't work)
Should I use gasket sealer when installing the new pump/gasket? The old pump did not appear to have any sealer on it. Also, is there a tightening sequence for the water pump bolts? I can't seem to find anything in the WSM. Has anyone ever removed a cam housing with the engine still in the car? I got the passenger side cam housing out ok by jacking up that side of the engine, but it looks like I will not be able to get it in easily with all the hydraulic lifters constantly falling out. Would it be easier to just pull the engine (and replace oil pan gasket while its out)? There isn't much left to disconnect. Thanks for all the help so far! I will post some pictures if anyone is interested.

Use water pump sealer on the gasket; Permatex makes it.
Pump bolts. I went around about 3 or 4 times tightening the bolts. I first put Anti-seize compound on the threads. I just judged the tightening and used a 1/4 drive socket set until I felt the gasket and sealer were good and sealer squeezed out a little. I sort of have a feel for it I guess. Use a criss-cross pattern when tightening, starting from the center out.

Ok, I will follow your advice. Most of the water pump bolts weren't very tight, so I guess as long as the new pump/bolts are "snug", I should be okay.
After tightening all the bolts, can I use an appropriate size socket to "tap" the idler pulley into place?
