Intermittent Wipers Working Intermittently

Intermittent wipers will work one day, then the next not, usually stop working when I am using them WHEN IT IS RAINING, so I have to manually flick them on and off (when there is not enough rain for the other speeds). When they are in the non-working state, I press the lever down to activate them, and with the speed adjustment potentiometer in the max delay position, the wipers will wipe, return, pause 1 second, then wipe continuously @ low speed. In the min delay position, they run continuously @ low speed. I tested the potentiometer and it works properly. Is this what happens when the relay fails? And why would it start/stop working spontaneously?

your relay may be bad pull it out and open it up smell it for burning clean the contacts then test the wipers also consider inspecting the motor connection under the cowl.
\ if none of these fix it ,try taking the wiper motor out and cleaning it and lubing it

Does the wiper motor somehow factor in to the intermittent wiper circuits proper function? It would seem that if the wipers work in lo, med, and hi speeds then the intermittent setting should work as long as the relay functions properly, maybe I am wrong. Either way, it can't hurt to inspect the motor. I had pulled the relay last time it stopped working, put it back in, still didn't work, then a week later it mysteriously started working again. There was no evidence of any internal defects.

there is also a high probability that the speed selector( rheostat) is not functioning correctly the rivets seem to corrode on the metal connections restaking them can return function
