alternator...?

My 84 has some odd charging problems.

At idle, the volts show 12.1, at 3,000 rpm it shows 13.9...

What should I see at idle...?
I suppose the one wire GM alternator is the way to go here... I'll check more posts....

Al

check the blue exciter wire.. it's been a common problem on here in the last couple months and pretty well covered by some smart people... read the altenator posts... it usually circles around to the blue wire

thanks...

You probably saved me some time/money. I was comparing the volts to my E420 mercedes, which puts out over 14 volts...

I'm still going to go through the engine ground and battery ground staps to make sure they are ok. Then since I've drained my battery several times I may pickup a new one tomorrow. Pep boys has the same Bosch 49 for 90 dollars...

Al, is this the same huge battery or the smaller one. Look for the Battery that uses the A/C, it has more cranking amps. The book at both Autozone and Walmart show the smaller one for our cars for some reason. Then it show's the earlier years using AC for the larger one. Get that one. I just bought one for the S last month for $89 at Walmart with $9 more. That was $50 cheaper that the Autozone one I bought the Euro 2 years ago. FYI

new battery

I first went to pep boys to see a Bosch 49, which is what my current 7 year old battery is. As I suspected, the new Bosch 49 is slightly taller, just too tall.

I drove down the street to Kragen/Oreilly, they had a battery that was the same size as my old bosch 49- $109 dollars with a 6 year warr., and the car starts right up with authority now.

I have a trickle/float charger, I'll probably start using it to avoid continues battery drainage....

I don't get it. The Bosch 49 at Pep Boys is taller than a Bosch 49 at Kragens?

Sure, let me clarify, The oreillys battery is not a Bosch, it's some other generic brand, but the oreilly size says "49", which is the same size as the Bosch

I had read somewhere that the new boschs 49's where just slightly too tall. Perhaps it would fit, but I wanted the exact same size. And it was a quick decision in between conference calls yesterday.
