928 as daily driver
Hi guys,
I have been on the 911 and 930 forums for a while. I have owned a 911sc and now a 930 but I have always had something fot the 928 power, look and advanced technology and comfort... I have a possible one out here that would only require minimal work to get it going and I was wondering how they do as a daily driver. I do mainly city driving back and forth to work but my wife does not really like the idea of replacing her old VW rabbit (which is now my going to work car while she keeps the Jeep with the kids) for a 928 as she is not sure about 2 old Porsche in the driveway... she does not understand that most of the downtime on my 930 is due to upgrades and not because it breaks... So what is your take on using these cars everyday? Thanks David

I know MPDano on this forum uses both his 928's as daily drivers, and many others have nothing but 928's for transportation
![]() I'm not in a position personally where I need a daily driver, but my 928 has never let me down when I've needed it for trips in the countryside or even long 3000+ mile vacation drives. I'd say it's much more useful as a DD than a 930, because of a significantly lower noise level in the cabin, and huge amount of cargo space when the seats are folded down. Hell, I've even taken mine to Home Depot for sheets of MDF and stone bricks ![]()

They will be as good and any other 25 year old car as a daily driver. I don't dd mine but it has never let me down. Things will happen, probably most of them will be electrical, they ARE old after all, no matter how well maintained. If you can afford the gas go for it.

Yup I DD Mau both my 928's. I just alternate days with them. Both run and feel so much different, but both are hella fun to drive. Always gets stares. Once you sort them out and get all that deferred maintenance out of the way, they are very reliable. Let's see that prospective 928 in picture form. We love pics!

Thanks guys,
I spoke with the guy and I should get pictures shortly... He mentionned a coolant "y" hose that was defective and that the leather wrapping in the side rear windows is shrinking a bit. I will let you know what happens!! Thanks David

People who you will pry their 928 out of their cold dead hands are those with a long distance, but not heavy traffic commute. Key to reasonable use as a daily driver, keep the PM aggressive, not fix when it breaks, and have a second car for those times the 928 is acting its age. |

I'm a PM believer... and I will still have the 930 and our good old Jeep to carry the kids so I should be ok on that...
I was just wondering if they had a tendency to get very expensive quickly. I will do the search for 928 PPI and see what are the main issues. Thanks again David

Like any old car, a 928 is going to give you trouble from time to time. These cars are hand-built, so they are done right, and all the systems of the car are very durable and reliable. Accessories are NOT; expect trouble with power door locks, power windows, cruise control, and the sunroof.
Other than that, as long as you do a timing belt every 45,000 miles, the car is very reliable. And it is actually very practical. One day, just to do it, I hauled home 6 bags of mulch in the yawning hatch of my 928. I also brought home a full sized washing machine that I found in a thrift shop at a robbery price; It was for sale for $50, was almost BRAND new, one of my tenant's washer had died that morning...and I knew that it would be gone the moment I left, since several people were there and were eyeing it. I didn't have time to go home and get the minivan. They refuse to "hold" things at this place- I had one chance to snag this device at an 80% discount, and I had the 928 outside. So I went for it- Practicality thy name is 928! ![]() ![]() The Porsche 928: The only $10,000 car that can go 175 mph....and deliver major home appliances! N! Ditto, nice car, Normy. That's a great picture!!!
I've rescued 5. After rescue and basic refresh I'd drive them anywhere. Have done little cosmetics, just cleaned them up. Wife, daughter and I each drive one daily. (86,84,85) The other two are sitting in the driveway ready to swap into the rotation. We've decided to simply run them all as long as we can, maintaining and logging miles. Am using flatdish stock wheels on most of them, some with wider S4 rears, 16 inch all season tires. The one that sat the longest, down for a full 10 years, now carries me on major trips every 4 weeks -- 1500 mile round trips. It will do snow duty here in Elkhart this winter. We'll see how that goes. Its dead reliable, but the electrical required patience and wiring diagrams. Like any car, don't buy one that was in the hands of some hot rod kid. Best to find one from an older person who has protected it from thrashing. I've had one thrashed car, the first one, an 84 USA -- it was a handful to repair. So far, knock on wood, I've not had the heads off any of them --- have only needed to perform peripheal work to engines. Do not buy an automatic car, esp. S4, without making a numerical confirmation of crankshaft endplay first.

Its a watercooled v8 car. Not much to it. Keep it maintained correctly and you can drive it anywhere there is pavement.
Now I understand asking this question of 911's but 928s are real cars made to be driven. ![]() [ducks before the retaliation from the 911 owners] |

Yeah, daily driver 928 wonderful .... but in December it will be one year since I needed a AAA tow and that makes me eligible to upgrade to PREMIER with the 100+ mile towing allowance, and I am thinking real seriously about spending the extra annual fee to do it. BTW the tow last December was an electronic issue with our 99 Lincoln.

Well...
Saturday I ended up at the emergency for massive abdominal pain. After appendix surgery I am back home and the 928 is sold... It will be for next time. I keep my eyes open as you guys have me convinced that it is the "right" car to get... Thanks and looking forward to being on this forum soon! David

I have been lurking around here for quite some time, but the picture below, single handedly, prompted me to Register. That is pure AWESOME!! LOL!!! I was almost in tears, laughing. And, here I thought I was devoted to my Shark. I can honestly say I have never picked up a home appliance in my 928.
