Intake Refresh 32v

To remove these intake pieces and cam covers on a 1985 32V, for painting or powdercoating, what gaskets have to be replaced?

The intake gaskets that seal the pipes to the heads. Two options, the expensive crush-metal units from 86 or paper.

The injector O-rings. 2 per injector. (roger has these in viton)

And fuel lines if you haven't done so yet (crucial, truly)

-----------------

While there, you probably should replace the two crankcase vent hoses that lead to the passenger side camshaft cover. They decompose with time and oil vapor on the 85/6 cars. There are a couple other hoses in there to address, one for the ISV and a couple more. Check your PET for certain.

I would (and have) replaced the 10 organ pipe rubber boots, the throttle body boot and a large O-ring inside the throttle body. Also the Inner and outer MAF O-rings (One mounts on the MAF, the other below it mounts in the throttle body to accept the MAF.

I'd buy the 3 shock mounts, or standoffs, used to situate the throttle body in the engine valley.

--------------------

If you are powder coating the cam covers, then there is a set of O rings required for the 12 or 13 bolts on each cover, plus some important O rings that prevent oil from entering the spark plug holes.
Plus the cam cover gaskets themselves. Beware, on the 85, the cam cover bolts are odd-ball and cam sometimes shear in the head. BTDT. Research that before you start. I can show pictures actually if you need them.

New air cleaner is appropriate, also new boot to seal air plenum to top of MAF.

That's all I can think of off top of head, check with roger tyson, he has a list.

+1
That is exactly the list i would have posted, as I did the same on my 86 a few months back.

It gets to be necessary.

Do the rear water jacket gaskets need to be replaced too? I think they get loosened in the process?

+ 1 on silver.

Somebody on Rennlist did an over-the-top review of powder coating prep for these.
You might want to check it out. There are some important nuances. Stuff like how to treat the insides of the pipes, extreme concern about media not getting flushed then entering and completely destroying top end of engine, sensor not grounding through the layer of paint. ---- all little bits and pieces that can save your butt.

i spent 3 days blasting the paint off my parts with glass bead ,and when it came time to paint i chose the red so my work would not go unnoticed, landseer is right about be sure not to leave any media inside intakes, i washed out with a brush before painting,,, funny thing is the factory paint inside the intakes around holes were flaking off inside engine, you would think they would of taped off the insides, i guess too much work for mass production,, i dont remember any grounds on the painted parts, anyways whatever color you choose is okay, its a great upgrade for a car this age....i wasnt sure if i was suppose to put oil back in the side boxes that say porsche on them, ther was oil when i started cleaning,, i dont know if it was blow by or it was there for a reason,,,anyone?
