timing belt problem

im replacing my timing belt but there is a plastic piece under the timing gear by the crank that looks like a timing belt guide thats broken. its held on by two rivits. how do i relpace it. i dont see it on some pics. wondering what that part is and what it does .

i purchased the left inner timing cover from roger at 928rus and i was in the middle of replacing it and noticed that piece . its cracked in two pieces and its held on by a washer with a rivit.

Part 20a is a circlip. Not sure about the Rivet part.

that plastic guide is held on with 2 snap rings,
once you clean off the ends of the pins that the guide is held on to,
you should see these,
use a small pair of snap ring pliers to bend the rings open then they can be removed

Grind off the Rivets on one side and knock them out
Rivet on the new Guide if you can get one

Your right it looks like snap rings. Need to get the part and move foward with my tbelt job.

when removing the snap rings what you want to do is actually bend the rings open only enough to have them loose fitting then they can be lifted off the pins,
once you get these off then remove the washers that are under them..

NOTE put a towel down under the work area before you try to remove these as if one falls you may never find it

You could install the later single roller instead of the NLA(?) guide. (Depending on what covers you have now, you may have to modify them to fit.)



Of course, with proper belt management, you can just delete the (cold start) guide pulley(s)...

I had the unfortunate experience of using a gear puller on the gear (1) and didn't notice the guide and Large washer. Consequently, I broke the guide when I removed the gear. I called Roger and found the guide was NLA. So I did a little Polish engineering and drilled the guide (below the pin bores) and used a medium wire tie to secure the guide when I reassembled the front of the engine.


I think the fix is O.K. but I believe the actual purpose of the guide is to STOP the timing belt if the engine starts in reverse rotation. Hopefully, the fix will work.

Mike, I would baling wire in place of a zip tie. Not sure how long that zip tie will last with the engine heat.

Thanks Leo, I considered using wire but thought it may slice into what was left of the rail. And, there are several wire ties throughout the engine, on harnesses and things so I thought I'd give it a try. However, since it is attached directly to the studs on the front of the engine, it may deteriorate. I'll check it's condition periodically.
