Power Steering Fluid
OK, so I'm looking under the hood for something to mess with and noticed the power steering fluid level down a bit. Pulled some power steering fluid out of the cabinet and topped it off. Then not two days later, read that 928's don't use regular power steering fluid, but AT fluid. How messed up am I....do I need to drain it all and replace with ATF, or just ignore things and see what happens?

I got the same year. Either way, I also put Power Steering Fluid in mine. No issues last 2 years. They are both hydraulic fluids, not really sure what the diff is, besides the color. I'm sure someone here knows though.

When in doubt, read the directions. The owners manual states that the power steering unit uses any Dexron-D type of ATF. The back of the Prestone power steering fluid bottle doesn't say anything about compatibility with ATF. Since both products are basically hydraulic fluids, the advantage of ATF is it's lubrication properties. Think I'll just leave it alone and see if there is any adverse effects of mixing the two together.....a cautionary tale for everyone else!

Use what the transmission takes .>Less stuff to have in the garage .
FWIW I use ATF in the Powersteering so Its easier to spot leaks. |

I would be inclined to dump it and fill it with the right stuff. The ps fluid may have different seal conditioners in it, it may make them swell or harden. It would be a slow process and not noticeable until it leaks. The fluids may also react together causing foaming or other issues. then agian.. it may be not problem at all, it's just hard to say, but how much is a couple quarts of the right stuff really? Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid too.. with varying compatibilities between the DOTs. you can't mix some of those.
