84 automatic

hey guys,, i went to test drive an 84 today,, radiator was split open,,smog pump was seized and there was no belt on the fan,the car was all there, but i took it for a short ride and the transmission would slip upon acceleration,, let off and it would grab again, the car has been sitting a long time,,, brakes were gone and power steering was not present,,most of these problems dont scare me but the tranny does...is there a cure for this shifting condition? i made the owner an offer of 1k but he didnt give me an answer as of yet

fluid motion

Check level and condition of transmission fluid. You will need to put the car together a bit to evaluate it and of course running it in present shape presents all kinds of dangers. You would need to patch the radiator and check to see if the coolant system holds pressure just to begin. Please don't run it without a proper functioning cooling system.

You are facing a project car of epic proportions and so proceed with great care. Good luck

If the owner doesn't take the 1K he can go **** himself. That's a stack of work buddy. I agree on the fluid level and condition though. I've been there and done that too.

I paid $1100 for a perfect running 84 euro here in CA with a minor electrical problem, that car is not worth $1k, $500 maybe.

If the radiator is "split open" as you say, it sounds like someone may have run straight water in the cooling system and it froze.
I'd be very worried about a cracked block or heads.

so,where does one start with the checking of the tranny fluid ,, i never had an automatic, and there is no handbook,,,,,it seems to be slipping more than my test drive,,,,the owner probably beat the crap out of it after i test drove it,, i only moved it a couple hundred feet off the ramp truck

Put your car up on jack stands, make sure it's level to the ground. I also throw an extra set of old rims under the car with me just in case. Your Tranny is in the rear and the filler is on the Pass side. The Reservoir will have a mark on the side of it for where the level needs to be, clean it off if you can't see it. Your car must be warm "and" running when you check this. If it is low which it sounds like it is, then use a pump of sorts to get the fluid in the reservoir. Not sure if it matters but I have my car in Neutral. Once you get it topped to the line, get in the car and cycle through the gears with your foot on the brake. Do this a few times and put it back in Neutral. Check level and fill more if needed. All of this is done with car running, except the getting it on Jack Stands part.

I use Castrol Dex/Merc for now. Once I reseal my Trannies, I think I may try something better but not sure what yet.

Looks like a steal at a grand from here - and a non-sunroof car as well

Owning a 928 is risky business - but sometimes you just gotta say "what the fudge".

I agree as that looks very nice. We still need interior and engine pics as well. I still don't get the non-sunroof statement all the time as I LOVE my Sunroof.

Dexron VI seems popular these days, some like Mobil One, I think last thread got a vote for Torco. Important thing seems to be keeping it at the correct level.
