New guy

Hi I am new to the forum and to Porsche. This is my first. Just bought it today it has new brakes calipers suspension ball joints timing belt injectors plugs wires etc. Starts and runs well. (at least it did when I picked it up to put it on the trailer) and when I took it for a 3 mi. test run. Went out to start it a little later and it started right up ran for 30 sec. and died. Would not start for about 5min. then it started idled for a min or two and died again. Hoping it is just a little moisture in the gas. The other problem I have is that it has all new brakes but the left rear brake will sometimes not release and you have to release the pressure manually. I am thinking the brakes just need a good flushing? Of course it has the prerequisite electrical gremlins but all in all I think it was ok for 1300. I have worked on cars for many years (mostly Z's and AMC's) so I will probably be asking for a lot of help because this is a whole different animal. Sorry for such a long post and thanks in advance for all the help

Welcome to 928s and the forum! You will definitely find lots of help here. We love pics so post them when you are working on something.

One of the first places to start with these cars (in general) would be the fuse panel located on the passenger side foot well. Remove every fuse (there are lots) and clean the contacts, clean the fuses and check for continuity. Also, everyone here is adamant about proper grounding. A basic search in grounding (and fuse panel) should turn up a bunch of pics on all the ground points and fuse panel info.

What info did the previous owner provide when they said all new brake calipers? How long ago were they installed and was this car a daily driver or did it sit for a long time? Were they installed by a shop or himself? Can you physically see they are new? It seems as though the system would have got a flushing when they installed the new calipers. A caliper that is hanging up usually has contamination or rust on the piston due to a torn boot. Or they were not careful when installing new pads and shoved the pistons back without cleaning.

I would pull it off and have a close look. Maybe post a picture or two.

Welcome to the Board and the World of 928's. Like Rupesy said, "grounds, grounds and grounds." Here is a good Topic for some known issues and fixes.

**MOST Common 928 Issues AND Fixes**

Now the next thing we like here is Pics, pics and more pics. Also, make sure to post your Model Year in your Profile Signature.

Welcome to the forum and ownership of the finest car ever made.

I don't think I would trust anything the previous owner touched if the brakes aren't right. Best to do it before you buy, but still IMHO required is an inspection by someone expert in the 928 to get you a baseline on what needs to be done.

Me likey! The Porsche 928 is a truly awesome machine. The naysayers were always and still are wrong about them.

Thanks for the replies. The previous owner drove the car from time to time in the summer. The previous owner did the fuse panel as was suggested in an earlier reply. I intend to start with new grounds and go from there. The previous owner had everything working but the car recently lost the brake lights, but most of the rest of the electrical system seems to function. I will tear into the brakes this weekend and will probably have questions at that time. Thanks again

Welcome. I'm a recent new owner as well. My recommendation? There are several forums that contain TONS of information on the 928. The main ones I frequent are Pelican and Rennlist. Chances are any problem you enconter has already been seen and solved by someone else.

What year is your car? That information will greatly help subsequent diagnosis of your issues. It would be great if you could put the model year in your signature line.

And congratulations on your purchase!

Sorry knowing the year would probably help in a number of ways. I'm not sure how to put it in my signature line but I will attempt to. My 928 is an 84.
