jacking basics s4 87
this is a simple question, but thought any s4 owners might know.
this s4 has 4 jacking pads, but unlike other porsches i work on, there is no center jack point for the jack. i.e. under center of door sill bottom i also see no main crossmember etc to lift the car. some porsches i can do the rear by lifting on rear jack pad, and then place the jackstand on the torsion bar for example it seems that the jacking points are at exactly where i need to put the jack stands. need some help here. thanks. |

In the front I usually jack on the suspension mounting points.
In the rear you can jack on the transmission cradle crossmember without trouble - this will lift the entire rear end, but you need a shallow and long jack...

jacking points s4
thanks. i will look for those areas. i guess in the front when you mention suspension mounting points, this means to control arm?

Yup. Some have succes using a large block of wood on the chassis beam running right "behind" the jacking point, too. (Looking at the car from the side)

You can also jack the rear jackpoint, and lift high enough to get the jackstand under the front jack point. If you do this on both sides (jacking at the rear jackpoint) till you get jackstnds under the front jackpoints then you can jack at the rear cross member and get jack stands under the rear jackpoints. (dont be scared, the 928 has a very stiff uni-body so you can cross jack it that way without windows popping out and such..). |

jacking points
Thanks for all replies...in the rear i can see center support under tranny and can lift there and put rear jackstands in place. For fronts...i see the different methods...there is a center plate right at steering rack i assume we do not want to lift there to get both fronts?

Consider a set of Porken liftbars: Liftbars
I would not be jacking up from anywhere other than the jack points. |

I start at the back and use the tranny cradle to lift the car and place stands under the rear pads. I then move to the front and lift on where the front of the a arm bolts at the bottom of the skid plate. Since the car is on jack stands at the back it will lift even and you can place both front stands on the pads at once.

"front of the a arm bolts at the bottom of the skid plate" i assume this is in center of car, not slanted to one side, and skid plate is behind the rack?

This is the way I've always lifted the car and there were no problems what so-ever.

no, just on the front of either the left or right a arm. (off center) If the rear is on stands it will lift even as if jacking in the center

jacking basics s4
just to close out this thread, i was able to jack up the car as instructed by forum using the rear jack point, and then i placed a jack under front jack point. then i used wood 2 by 4 on fron frame area, and basically tilted the car and lifted one side and placed jacks, then went to other side and did the same. put wood blocks under jack points and jackstands at four corners......it takes patience as it moves a bit when you jack up one side.....but after some adjusting....it sits nicely....
thanks all. |
