Oldest factory 928 in my rearview mirror

Going thru some pictures tonight.

Found a shot I took one exciting day not too long ago.

This is 928 Euro serial number 00011, the oldest production 928 in the world.

Liberated. On a trailer, headed to higher ground and a new home.

I was driving, somewhat scared to death, knowing the history of what Jim (in passenger seat at the time) had loaded onto the trailer.

It was a very memorable day, glad to have been part of it.

I think Jim had just posted mobile phone rennlist reply to Stan (Mr. Merlin), who from Colorado had just about figured out what we where up to on our secret mission that day.

What a day that was!

One of my favorite parts was Landseer's "exit strategy", knowing we were short on time... wife and kid at the pool, due home any moment.

I believe we hold the record for the quickest removal from trailer, of a non-running pre-production 928.

Went something like... line up the trailer btw the gate, lower ramps, push really hard, hope it lands in the right place (which it did) close the gate (so wife doesn't see it)...

Then Landseer departed, just as quick as the car was unloaded.

The whole thing was surreal at the time. The adventure happened in less the 48 hours, all in.
Contacted seller Thurs afternoon, squared up the deal the same day, car in by backyard Sat afternoon.

Nice, more pictures, interior, pasha is cool! Rear photos? I thought all of the Euros had side lights on the front fenders behind the wheels.

I think the early cars had no side markers at all, front or back.


This was barely a production car, earliest serial number within a test batch of 12. They were being assembled for the big press reveal in early 1977 . (Porsche started the 928 series with 00011, like for the 914 series ). Not everything had been worked-out yet.



The Pascha is an optical art pattern, not a checker flag per se, but a optical illusion variation. That's how I think of it, at least. (Paul Champaign has recreated it by lasering into leather seat fabric -- very cool).







Jim and I looked over the car pretty closely and believe the fender damage is pretty much limited to the sheet metal. It didn't seem to mess up the hood and bolt line at all.

You know how it is, we had the directions, checked-off the street signs, couldn't find the house.

We were doubling-back on a street in this old residential area, now doing a visual search in backyards for the car. The owner had it parked by a little shed behind a rental property. Jim was squirming in the seat, getting nervous I suspect. Was this craigslist ad even real?

Bammm, I saw it! Whipped the burb to the curb. I think Jim didn't see the car until he got out, because I parked with another garage shed between our line of sight with the car. He got out with his large satchel of cash money and started walking where I was pointing.

I'm not clear on the wife/kids/pool/exit strategy comment. What's that about?

I know her well, at least her feelings at the time about this subject, and surmised that Julie wasn't fully on-board with the acquisition of another Porsche vehicle. Lets just say that.



I'd gotten sandwiched in between Charles Payne and his better half three weeks earlier in a separate but similar situation. We had snatched another 78 out of Virginia Beach / Smithfield. Charles told his wife it was my car, and that my wife couldn't know, and that Charles had to store the car for me for a while. But Charles didn't tell me all that. When we went to return the trailer, she rode with us to the Uhaul place. Charles got out of the tow vehicle at a gas station, she took the opportunity to do some triangulation quizzing of me while we were alone, ****hit the fan.

So guys, I've got the burb, and I'll help you, but when we get to the destination expect a drop n go from me.

What Landseer said.
I could write a book on the art of purchasing Porsche 928s, while staying married.

One purchase required me as a "silent partner"... yet another required the car to be shipped to a state 800 miles from my home.
This #1 really hit close to home... my backyard to be extact. Wife calls it the "junkyard dog". Thats ruf!

And Landseer, you are right on. Skilled in the art of drop n go. I always thought of it as a clean and jerk. Potato... Potato.

Umm, come to think of it, wasn't I also involved in the acquisition of that Perl car?

Isn't that the one we used the Surburban to pull out of that high-end marina near the Naval Academy? I think I lingered around your house a bit too long after that one.

With the last car sitting in the Porsche museum storage, not much chance of any other car generating the stir that this one did.

The color combination of Number 1 is very appealing to me.
The seats are in very good condition compared to the rest of the car.
I'd love to restore that one due to it's significance.
You really should share the story by contacting Hemmings Sport and Exotic
They love this type of thing and they are into cars in this condition that are not
garage queens or museum pieces. They did a story a few months ago on a
high mileage completely beat DD 924, they'd really be interested in this.
It would greatly generate interest in the car and 928s imo.

The back end picture is great, i read a long time ago in Panorama Magazine
that Porsche only updated the rear fascia because the mold on the original finally had worn out of tolerance.
I like the original rear better. The design is so ahead of it's time the Panamera design pales in its comparison.
I looked at a Panamera today and imagined it as a GT with 2 doors..yawn, front fender treatment is silly.

Editor has a daughter who goes to UofR. Waiting for an opportune moment to make a connection.

Let me know if you need that right front fender. I've got one. You might have to have some aluminum work done to the side marker hole of the one that I have to make it match, but I bet it could be done.

I'll take you up on that! ...but it has to be white... I'm kidding, any color will do just as long as it's an early style fender.

The car has been found for a year and a half. Lansdeer and I were just reminiscing about a great day.

Been talked about on RL, may have been talked about on Pelican before as well.

This interior is nuts. Kinda ugly in a cool retro way.
