82 5 speed trans ID

Can anyone tell me where the transmission ID/code info is located on the trans? Thanks

Look on the bottom roughly below where the axles come out, between trans proper and the differential. There is a flat spot and the ID is stamped into the metal, not raised like all the casting marks.

82 should be IIRC a G28/03 or 05, something like that. Good to write down the whole number and letter sequence, but serial number and motor ID rarely are even close. Porsche didn't do the matching number thing like some US cars.

The number I found is g 28/05 12 11c 1121 I haven't found a place to break the numbers down. I'm a 944 guy trying my luck in the 928 would. Any help will be great

Basically the 5-spd found on all '80-'82 cars.

John, stick with the 944's.

There are enough sharks getting disassembled.

An early trans has to be testable to be worth more than $50 or so.

G28 means 928 manual transmission
05 is the version, as said common in 80-82.
12 is the differential type code, I forget what means what but can indicate LSD or optional gear ratio.
11c11211 is the serial number.

Its an early syncro style transmission, usually needs rebuilding, not as desirable as newer ones for both reasons. Still has some value even if its just a core as long as you don't see any obvious damage.

Thanks for all of the info. I understand parting these should be a last option. This 928 had the engine in the cargo area and was 3 days from the crusher. Maybe someone can use these parts to keep their 928 from the same fate.

Picking over the bones can find a few good things, posts some pictures of the remains, and people can make some suggestions or requests. Unless you like sitting on parts for a long time, best to keep prices low and move it out.
