Some 1982 (928) issues
I have a couple of issues on my 928 [1982] that I haven't driven for several years.
The dash light doesn't work but all the others and the warning light do. I checked fuse 11 and it's OK. Rotating the brightness adjustment didn't help either. I looking hopefully to fix the simplest problem first. |

The dial switch is probably bad..... disconnect the 2 wires that that plug into the switch and short them together... If the light come on its the switch

funny,
it hasnt been driven in a few years but your worried about a light on the dash. I would suspect that you have bigger fish to fry. Clean all the grounds, and the battery terminals, charge the battery. drain the fuel out, clean the tank, put in new fuel lines, change the oil and filter, clean out the aircleaner , look for nests, change the coolant, inspect the timing belt, change the brake fluid,

Sounds more like a recent purchase with no history. Just an FYI, we've all been there.

Thx Mrmerlin
I've checked the obvious things you suggested. The car starts up OK and I've driven it cautiously. The dash light problem didn't show up until last night since I had only taken in out in daylight. |

Hey Bills
Is the dial switch the "Instrument Illumination Control" under the dash on the left? How do you get to it & the wires? |

Yep., thats the one.... You need to remove the plastic cover exposing the dial.... it hard to see and work up there, but its can be done. Good luck !

Actually, I've owned it since 1988. It has 79k miles on it and I did start it a couple times the last 2 years but only drove it for the first time 44 miles this week.
It's always been hard to start if it doesn't "go" right away. I learned years ago that the only fix is to take off the air filter & wedge the throttle plate open and it always start right up. I read almost all of the posts on this site & am impressed with the quality of info. |

Hmmm, Sounds difficult! I'm thinking of strategically taping a small flashlight on the dash if I venture out at night. |

That switch is a poor design and fails all the time.... In fact there are some stories out there of them causing fires....

My next issue is the driver side window doesn't work. Fortunately, it's stuck in the up position. I want to jumper around the switch, as you suggested for the dash light, and need to know how to get it out of the console. |

Hard to start, esp. if cold and as temps get cooler .... one thing to try is replacing the thermo/time switch on this model. It controls the cold start injector. Failure mode is flood, according to my research, though when it was affecting my cars I never smelled extra gas. Replace them on 2 different 84 cars and solved hard-to-start cold problems. Its a sensor located on front of block, up near cooling bridge, screwed in axially, ie, wire connectors pointed toward front of car. Common failure item in Ljet cars.
Lots of experienced guys on this forum, some have done major rebuilds and refreshes on a lot of cars. Would like to see some pictures of the car. 25 years is a long time to own a car. Last edited by Landseer; 08-09-2013 at 01:03 AM.. |

I agree with all your suggestions & have done or checked them. When I replaced the air filter, I had no problem getting the intake ducts on and the hose that connects to the bottom of the top housing. There's a small protrusion or cylindrical neck on the left side of the bottom housing that looks like a place for a hose or line connection. Any idea on what, if anything goes there? I'd appreciate any helpful advise. |

The contacts in the switch are probably worn.... There is a rework on here somewhere to fix temp., but its best just to replace the switch (around $40) .... Those switches pop out of the console, Use a flatblade screwdriver and carefully pry the end of the switch housing, make sure you are prying the housing and not the plastic rocker switch top.

Any ideas on my question to Mrmerlin about the air cleaner housing port that looks like it should have something connected to it. |

Looking at the window switch, it looks like I should pry at the the edges that would remove all 4 switches together. Is that what I should do. I tried to add photos on the site but need to find a hosting site to get a URL. I can send photos [at least to other cell phones]. |

Are you talking about the bottom of the air box? On my 82 on the passenger side of the air box, there is a tube coming up from the back of the engine that connects to the bottom of the air box.
It doesn't seem necessary for the engine to work right. When I was trying to get my rough running issues sorted, lots of times I didn't bother to get this connected and there was no difference. |

Hey Mike
I had no problem with the bottom one on the Air Duct that simply "sit" on a tube coming from below. The "mystery" one is just 2 inches or so from that hose & it's a short nipple that's part of the bottom housing. |
