How do you swap the ignition lock?
Well, the title says it all, really.
The ignition lock in the '78 is very worn (key can be removed while the engine is running) but the one in my '86 parts car is fine, so I want to swap them. Can you just swap the ignition cylinder, or do you need to swap the whole steering column?

The ignition cylinder can be removed but it requires removal of a split pin on the top of the column.

It's a bit fiddly but not too hard. You'll be fine!

You may want to take apart the old lock and see if you can restore action so you can maintain the same tumblers and a single key for everything - you could swap the barrel & body from the spare lock and see if the tumbler pins are still good enough to reuse?... you may even be able to use some of the replacement ones. It may also just be some broken/stuck springs...
Much more convenient to have one key... Alan

I'm changing the door, hatch and glove compartment locks as well, so I'll have one key for all

Nope, not really. I'm swapping whole assemblies, so actually the only tough one is the ignition.

The hatch is easy apart for the fine tuning of the lock realignment... the doors - not so much.
You have to get into the door and past the protection plate... I'd not rank this as a fun project - allow about 2 hours per side. Alan

I think you can send the original key and the new tumbler to 928 Intl and they will match the new tumbler to that
key. |

Lock realignment? Why? I just removed the allen screw, popped out the old lock, put the 'new' one in, replaced allen screw. Works beautifully, two minute job at the most... But this is non alarm locks and vacuum assisted, so may be simpler than the later ones.
