Brake Pad Retaining Spring
![]() I cannot figure out how to release the retaining spring on this caliper. I have not run across this type before. Can anyone give me some instructions so I can remove the pads. Looks as if I may need both pads and rotors. These are supposed to be upgraded rotors and pads on my 1989 944 Turbo. I have a lot of documentation on this car but nothing that tells me what the upgrade parts are. Any help will be appreciated. Randall rdoine@gmail.com |

Grab a pair of pliers and squeeze the spring in the middle, lengthwise.
Easy peasy.

Squeeze in this direction with pliers or channel lock suckas. Then the top of the spring will lower and you can pull it outwards. Rotate the spring downwards and BOOM! Pads are now free to come out. You can remove the spring if you want by compressing the two lower legs together.

Thanks so much. I kept thinking I had to squeeze the spring at the bottom. No wonder I was stuck. Thanks again.

I know I need pads. Rotors might need work also. The calipers were rebuilt a couple years ago.
My next problem is what pads to order since I don't think these are the stock calipers. Any ideas? |

Those LOOK like they are the standard front brake calipers for an '89 Turbo S, based upon your pictures, but they may possibly be "Big Reds" from a 993.
Hard to tell without measuring the dimensions of the pad itself.

i have to say after changing the brakes on many different cars, the 951 factory brembo brakes are by far the easiest to change pads on, primarily because of this quick-release spring design.

![]() ![]() ![]() Here is a picture of the front of the caliper. It has been painted the red. The back of the pad is 5 1/8 wide The front of the pad if 5/16 wide There seems to be plenty of pad let so I assuming the cause of the dash pad light coming on is not the driver side front. I'll have to check the other corners. Thank you for your help! |

I had a brake pad sensor light come on because the wires had worn through from rubbing on the inside of the wheel! Wires weren't secured properly.
