Option #1...remove crossmember to allow engine to drop down.
Option #2...remove transaxle and slide torque tube back. Option #3...bend driveshaft or damage clutch attempting to force them together at an angle. Try to avoid option #3...... ![]()

To completely remove the tube would require removing the rear suspension/torsion tube. (not as easy) When you slide the tube back, you will notice it will only go a few inches, then catch on the torsion tube. I have heard that spinning it over will allow a few more inches (have not tried this)

I've never had a problem installing the engine in a 944.
Never removed any crossmembers either. Seem to go right in. I've done this so many times. |

I'd like to know how to install or remove a 944 engine without removing the front cross-member

"I've never had a problem installing the engine in a 944.

Dude, no way you're gonna slide the engine forward 8 inches to clear the drive-shaft without dropping the crossmember! hawkster, did you use a clutch-centering tool to make sure the clutch-disc was centered on the crank & pilot-bearing before you clamped down the pressure plate? Also having a leveler makes it 10x easier to tilt and angle the engine. |
