hyper Flasher -- front turn signal problem

Please help me with this 'trivial' problem;

I have a 1989 951; the car is in good shape with 130 000 kms on it. When I activate the left turn signal, the left signal blinks normally. When I activate the right turn signal, the right blinks way too fast.

I thought, no problem, must be just a burnt out bulb - but by activating the right signal and going around the car - cant find a light not flashing or not lit - it just blinks too fast.

I changed the front bulbs on both front sides - still the same result - I guess I should try the back bulbs now ...

Any idea what can cause this? All the fuses are fine ... there is only one relay for both sides, I dont think that its the problem ...

Could it be the socket? has anyone every had this before ???

One of the front bults should be a dual-filiament bulb. If you replace it with a single-filament one, you'll end up with this problem.

I did not know this (with my poor mechanical skills) but when I went to the autoparts store, I had brought the bulb I thought defective, so the clerk could give me the same one.

I do remember seeing the two filaments in there ...

If you have the same bulb in both the front signal housings, obviously this isn't your problem as one side works properly.

The wrong bulb or corrosion build up/bad contact can cause the problem (check the rear).

I had this happen, correct bulb was in there. I used a wire brush and something else like a coat hanger to scrape the funk out of the socket and it has worked fine since. I think that the system is set up to somehow detect if the voltage is not drawing or something and it blinks fast, to let you know there is something wrong.

The relay will sense an overdraw current situation. So if one of the bulbs is over 21 watts (stock for turnsignals) you will get the fast flash. And if you have a heavy duty relay, like for towing a trailer with lights, it will flash rapid if you don't have enough current draw on it. Then, as noted, if you have corrosion you may be drawing much more current so the rapid flash situation kicks in. Sometimes you can actually expend enough current to turn the area into a little toaster oven without blowing the fuse.

Or the relay may be shot.

Thanks for all the info. When I find some time I'll check the rear turn signal socket, then maybe change the relay ...

This 951 is going in storage soon ...
