Intermittant charging problem
Hi. I just acquired an 87 951 that has a small problem.
It does'nt charge consistantly. (usually not). I have seen the Voltmeter needle occasionally sit at the correct place (just below 14v) but mostly it sits just above 12, and today it began to start hard, finally not starting at all, requiring a jump. The battery is now totally dead (sitting on the charger now) Anyway, what is the most likely problem? All bad alternator? bad VR? ground? Thanks for any input. Brian

Grab the multimeter and start playing.
Check the grounds, on the 944 series an electrical issue usually points to a marginal ground somewhere.

I had the same problem. I replaced the main ground and had the alternator rebuilt...so I'm not sure which really fixed the problem. I suspect it was the alternator rebuild.
