I'M BACK!

Long story short I'm going back to the strip this Wednesday looking for some better numbers.

It's been a slow year with regard to my car, but I just got it up and running again this week. Let's start off with the new specs:

T04E 60-1 HiFi w/ #8 exhaust housing & Turbonetics Stage V turbine (AKA LR Super 61)
Lindsey Racing 4" Exhaust (Magnaflow)
Siemens 55lb (570cc) Low Impedence Injectors
Megsquirt-II SMD-3.57

(One might say it's the poor man's version of a Vitesse Stage 3 Kit haha. Total Cost was around $1800)

I spent a lot of time chasing my tail after an electrical snafu last summer, but it looks like my car is back and ready to brawl with the new SMD megasquirt. I never trusted my soldering on the old board. I have the fine motor skills of a young elephant cub ...and the patience of one!

I also installed an Autometer Z-series Boost Gauge and Innovate Motorsports AFR Gauge on the A-pillar ...yea I admit its looks kinda goofy but it's a convenient spot and I'm young enough that it looks alright to me.

At first I had a bunch of trouble trying to get the car to run right with the 55lb injectors. It would go lean and bog all over the place for no apparent reason. Bumping up the injector opening time from 1.0 to 1.3 ms completely fixed this! Now it idles wonderfully at 1000rpm and cruises around just fine. The few times I've been on boost have been awe inspiring! The 60-1 HiFi doesn't seem laggy at all to me. I know it's a pretty oldschool turbo but frankly I think it's awesome.

Anyway, I look forward to posting up some pictures and results later this week. Hopefully I can get the fuel all dialed in between sailing and my dentist appointment tomorrow.

Best,
Bob

I'm running into a couple more issues. It seems that even running only 13psi I'm maxing out the 55lb injectors. At 6000 rpm the duty cycle is just over 80% and the AFR is 12.1:1!

I'm thinking that these injectors should easily be able to support 13psi so perhaps the issue is one of the following:

Fuel Filter
Fuel Pump
Fuel Pressure Regulator (It's a 3 bar, almost brand new)
Fuel Damper (lol I don't see how this could be a problem but who knows)

Regardless, this thing is FAST at 13psi!! I'm running a fairly conservative ignition table but nonetheless WOW! Hopefully I can get everything sorted out before tomorrow afternoon so we can get some drag times. Even if the fuel issue doesn't sort itself out, I'll do some low boost runs.

do you have a fuel pressure gauge? it would be handy for troubleshooting this issue.

No, I almost bought one last week though. I'm kicking myself for not doing it now!! I'll pick up a new fuel filter tomorrow morning ...the downside is that if it does fix the issue I'm going to have to re-tune a lot of stuff

Shoot, I might just run at 12psi. I have a feeling that will be enough to nail down some runs in the high 13 second range. Right now it's pulling so hard in 3rd gear that I keep thinking I'm in second, only to look down and realize I'm doing 90!

17-18 degrees advance more or less across the power band at 13psi. I think the rich AFR's make this a fairly safe setting for now.

do you have a good boost source going to the FPR?? If not it may not be rising correctly and you are running 13 psi at what ever static pressure is vs running at static + boost pressure.

Good luck btw I have been so PO'd at my car the last few times up that I don't even bother with ET anymore and just look at MPH.

Hopefully the new clutch will solve it and I can finally post a respectable timeslip. I have a bunch of slips with 14 second ET's and 116+mph. Even a 15 second slip at 118. Fricken car is a ***** when you cant' launch or shift hard.

Anyway GL again

Yea I'm pretty sure I have a good boost/vacuum source going to the FPR. It comes off the intake manifold and goes to the FPR, Damper, and Bypass Valve.

But Anyway, even with my fueling issues, here was my 3rd run. I'll refrain from excuses and just say, there was A LOT left on the table!

I was in the right lane, so thats 13.574 @ 104.84 mph. The 2.288 60 foot is deceiving, I had crazy wheel-spin after the 60 foot and the mustang in the left lane actually got ahead for a second.

Just picked up a new fuel filter. Hopefully that will fix my fuel starvation issue. Might try to get my hands on a fuel pressure gauge as well, but car is already starting to look like an airplane cockpit from the driver seat with all these gauges.

Anyway, next Wednesday I'm aiming for 12s if this fuel situation is solved.

New fuel filter is IN! Also verified the vacuum/boost connection.

Will test tomorrow morning! Kinda have my doubts that this will actually fix the issue but who knows...

Still going lean (maybe a marginal improvement but I'm probably just being optimistic). I'm going to order a Walbro fuel pump and adjustable FPR. The LR fuel rail kit is definitely a tempting upgrade because it would make the engine look so much nicer but it would also be sort of a waste of money and a pain in the ass when smog time comes around.

before you blow more money on parts, i'd get a fuel pressure gauge and verify you actually need new parts.

Yeah, thats probably the thing to do, I'll see what I can find at Jegs. It's time for a new fuel pump anyway so that's not a complete waste of money. The adjustable FPR would also be a nice piece to have. BAH why not get all 3?

The fuel filter may have helped some, because the car seems to be able to handle 14psi now without issue (AFR stays in the high 11s). 14psi is plenty for laying down rubber and joyriding around here

Bad news is, no strip this Wednesday and further progress is going to have to wait because I'm going back to LA for a couple months

On the bright side, maybe Santa will bring a CEP Stage III head and Cam this year?

i got the autometer 2663, electronic and safe to mount in the cockpit. it's nice not having to pop the hood to monitor fuel pressure;
