Odometer problem.....?
I replaced my odometer gear on my 1987 944 turbo and reinstalled everything only to find out that the Odo. still doesnt work. I know the gear failed because it was in pieces. I am wondering if there are any specific electrical connections or areas that may have caused this problem before.
Neither the trip or the ODO work and I know the gears are in good shape. So I suspect that the motor is not even turning. Any suggestions would be greatly helpful.

Well it could be the motor; I would take it to a speedo shop and let them test that for you.
For me, I had some chips that came off the 1 mile wheel that caused the ODO to stop working after ~5 miles. The wheel was able to move on its axle a bit due to the pieces chipped off, and it would lock up and stop. Take a good look at the mileage discs on your ODO to see if this has happened to you. For a fix all I did was to move the chipped wheel over to the 100,000x wheel, so that if/when it happens again the car will most likely be dead. Good luck, Keith

I had the exact same problem ( stopped working again after 600km). One cause was the old gear left chunks in the mating gear, so i re-opened the dash and cleaned out the chunks.
The bigger problem which took me a while to figure out was that the odometer was not lined up correctly and was stopping all the gears from turning. You should be able to spin the gears freely by hand, if it blocks try to line up your odometer numbers and try again. Do not roll back the odometer, first of all it's illegal and secondly it will mess up the placement of your odometer gears and possibly block both the trip meter and odometer from turning. Good luck. Also while you have the gauges out you should clean the mirrors and change the bulbs to get a nice bright display. Phil |

I had simular problem, but on mine the worm gear was slipping. I pulled it off and put a drop of super glue on the shaft. The gear that nomally breaks had slid sideways on its shaft, so I super glued it. Use a magnifying glass to look all over the other gears for loose or broken parts. While the gage cluster was out I spruced up the relective light prisums with aluminum foil after cleaning off the old silver paint. If you look up an article by texasblake.com you can see what I am talking about. My gage lights are bright again and the speedo works great. Remember you NEVER reset the trip meter except when the car is rock still.

I had the same symptoms. I took mine apart and I found the top set of gears, the gears that turn each number over when it goes from "9" to "0" were out of alignment. I have no idea how it happened but with them out of alignment they forced the entire odometer to bind and not work at all.
The top set of gears have an alternating fat tooth and thin tooth. There is a slot on each number wheel for the fat tooth to fit into when it changes the next number over. Once I lined them all up correctly I spun 1000+ miles on it by hand to make sure everything was moving freely. Both the odometer and the trip were working just fine.
