16' phone dials

Hi all,

Anyone know why the 16" phone dial wheel offsets are different between the 86 and 87+ model years for the 951? Was it to accomodate ABS? This kind of throws a monkey wrench into my plans for replacing my driver's side rear wheel on my 1987 951. If I were to purchase a rim off an '86, I'd have to get a spacer too... dang it.

In 1987, ABS was introduced to the line. To accomodate ABS, the geometry is different.. (cant recal specifics) but it required a change in wheel offsets. Even if you car wasn't equipped with ABS, the change was made to the line to simplify things.

So.. pre '87 are "early offset" (10-23mm) and 87+ are late offset (52mm or so)

An early offset wheel will stick out too far on a late offset car, a spacer will do you no good.

Maybe you could offset the offset by mounting skinnier tires on the wheels. But then, maybe you still couldn't get enough clearance that way, or wouldn't want to go with skinnier rubber. Just a thought.

Aren't the ABS brake calipers a different configuration and mounted differently also? Not sure, but maybe something to consider also.

Nope, everything is the same except for the hub and spindle. The late, non-ABS spindles have the mounting boss, but they are not machined out.

thanks for the info, all. Does anyone know where I can find a rear phone dial for an '87 944 Turbo for a reasonable price?

Use this wheel offset calculator to calculate exactly what you are getting into. As long as the tires don't rub, 18 inch should be no problem. There is also a tire calculator on that web site that allows you to input your original wheel/tire combo and get a direct dimensional comparison to the setup you are considering (offset must also be considered).
I put 18" CL55 turbine wheels on my 1999 SL600 and there is no real problem other than a slight rub at full right steering inputs. I could certainly change the tire size and eliminate the rub, but I don't feel a need to. Mine does not have the sport package. Depending on what wheels you choose, you may or may not have to change your lug bolts.
