86 951 needs spacers to run late offset BUT
Is it just to "look right"...or is it that they'll rub without having spacers? I'm looking for winter rims. Don't care if they look right. Does anyone know if 951S (928) wheels would run without actually rubbing? That way I could have one set of winter rims and run them on my Silver Rose and '86 if needed. --C

No, it's not about looking right but fitting correctly based on the early offset of 23mm.

I understand that the setup would be in no way optimized for the track. But I'll be driving like a granny in the snow.

The 951S wheels are not the same as the 928 wheels. The 951S wheels are the 7-spokers, and the 928 wheels are the "manhole covers". The place where I ran into insufficient clearance on a 951S with boxter wheels (my winter treads), was the front calipers. The 928 wheels should not have a problem with that, because they also had large front calipers, but I'm not sure about the offset, or if they will rub the fenders.

Whoops. I guess I hadn't realized that. Good to know. So they probably would work on the 951S... but I guess I'd need to just slap them on for the early offset 86 951

the PO had a set of late offset (55) on my 86 and the rears sheared through the e-brake cable. I heard a grinding and looked under to see that it had eaten through the rubber and was scrapping on the metal of the cable (and inner rim lip). I zip tied it back, but this made the e-cable harder to use.
I bought adapters... then went back to the original wheels. The adapters are for sale here: 1" and 1.5" adapters for sale |

I ran late offset kinesis wheels in the rear that where 9" wide with no problems.

928 wheels are usually 65mm offsett. If the rims are equal in width. Subtract the correct offset (55?). for every 12mm difference the wheels will be about 1/2 inch further in. If you were running a 55mm offset wheel the 928 wheel will be 10mm further in or almost 1/2 inch

I have a set of D90's on my 86'. The rears look good with a small spacer, and the fronts look funky as hell with no spacers. no rubbing or anything so I"m happy.
