considering purchase of 944T-need help
hey guys, this is my first time posting. im looking at a 86 944T. im hoping you guys can help. i wont be looking at it until tomorrow. im very familiar with corrados and problems to look for when buying one. im wondering of problem areas i should look for when inspecting a 944T. this car has every option available, its from a dealer, appears to be in mint condition, and has only 63K miles on it. i did a KBB on it and it came to 6500. theyre asking 9900. is this too much? what should i offer. mostly im wondering what problem areas i should be looking for(ie:electrical, compression, when test driving, etc.) thanks a lot guys, and hopefully ill be spending more time on here.

what the dealer is asking and what the car sells for are two entirely different things. is the car all stock?
the single most important thing is to know how the car has been taken care of...i mean the previous owner's records. the dealer may not have those. that would be a big minus. you probably know that our engines are interference design, which means make sure the timing belt & water pump have been changed every 30k. if no info, then you have to change them immediately. figure about $800-$900 for that. our clutches require lots of labor & $500 clutch kit, so figure about $1500 if you have someone do it for you. you might want to consider having a qualified porsche shop do a pre-purchase inspection. for these cars it's worth it. ![]() |

FYI - KBB values are WAY off the mark for 951s. A better guide is the most recent issue of excellence. With that said, the value of that car if it is excellent would seem to be ok at about $9000 (not referring particulary to Excellence, just a market sense of mine).
Be prepared to spend big bucks (like $$$ thousands) on one of these cars to keep it in shape if you are paying someone to do the labor (at least if you plan to drive the car hard). Something tells me though that you've twisted a few wrenches on your own and may be up for the challenge. If you don't have either records or a PPI you may as well go to Vegas with your 6k. You have better chances there of ever seeing your money again (especially if you plan to purchase from a dealer). To avoid getting screwed, try at least to get records and do a carfax. Look for good oil pressure (at least 2 bar at idle on the 951), good boost (about 1.8bar - 12 psi), and leaks (ps, h2o and oil). If the clutch is shot (slipping) automatically subtract at least $1500 as Blackfoot said. Finally let us know what you find before you plunker down any of your hard earned cash. There have been many a horror story with 951 purchases. Greg Hammond's comes to mind as maybe being one of the worst stories (low mileage car bought from dealer that lost motor within 600 miles). Best of luck. Also check rennlist.com for more info as there are some pretty knowledgable people that hang out there also.
