Restoring 951 turbo
I have an '86 944 Guards Red Turbo that I absolutely love! I am now in the process of turbo enhancement. I have ~ 90k miles on the car, with a LBE, K&N Air Filter, 2 Lindsey Smart Shims on the Stock Wastegate, a Fabspeed 3" Exhaust w/ Cat Bypass, Autothority Stage II Chips at 15 psi, Running Synthetics.
I'm looking into rebuilding the turbo from a K26/6 to a K27/6 with a 3 bar FPR and Vitesse chips mapped to the K27/6 at 15 psi. I would also like to change to a Tial 38 mm Wastegate, but I live in California and I don't know if I would be able to pass smog anymore? I need some help deciding where in Southern Cal I should bring my car to have the work done and still pass. I may leave off the wastegate addition as I believe I would either have to have a manual or electronic boost controller if I change the wastegate and i wouldn't even pass the visual here. Any help here? What type of horsepower gains could I expect from rebuilding the K26/6 into a K27/6 and what type of additional lag with my current setup? Any advice on shops in the Temecula/San Diego Area? What about paint shops? I have the original paint on the car and would eventually like to put some new Guards Red Paint on this puppy and showboat around town. Thanks for the help in advance, Jeff (P951) |

your car will pass if you run a cat, the smog tech will not be checking for a wastegate mod and turbo mod because he/she physically can't see it, but, you cannot have an exposed cone filter, so you need the stock air box or some kind of stealth maf . Also if you choose the 3 bar regulator, that may look factory enough for the smog tech to not know what it is. Try CRE in san diego, (comeau racing enterprises) I am the head tech. my cell 650-483-5989 Kev

Hi Kev,
Thanks for the reply. I have the stock cat on hand & I replace it every two years to pass smog. If I wanted to add some more punch to the turbo, would rebuilding my K26/6 into a K26/8 give me what I want. I would obviously need a new set of chips - probably Vitesse. I currently run My APE chips at 15 psi since about 50k miles & I've never had an issue. The car has 90k miles on it now. What about adding a manual boost controller to be able to hit around 17 psi & then getting Vitesse chips built to handle that amount of boost? If I put on the cat for smog would I still pass? I appreciate your taking time out of your day to help me - Thank you so much! Jeff |

If you are staying with the AFM, I have what your looking for. I have a 27/6 for use with AFM (will not out flow it) made by Evergreen turbo with about 10K miles on it. A Vitesse 27/6 chip and the smt-6 piggy back to dial it in. Will include the harness and DME.
Let me know if interested and I can talk with you about it. Steve |

A manual boost enhancer under the hood may also fail visual, and as well as a shiny billet diverter valve. To be quite honest, using a turbo with 20 + year old technology rebuilt or not is redundant to me, but that's me. I preffer new technology , but it requires fabrication, and a bigger budget, though, the end result is phenomenal!!!

Where is the "restoring" part of your question?
![]() All I see are mods, upgrades, etc
