951 Engine Rebuild question
Hello All,
Does anyone know of a shop that can do the rebuild in California? Car is currently in the San Francisco Bay Area but I do travel to Southern California at least twice a month and can bring it down to the LA area if needed. Whats an average fair cost to do the rebuild? Another option is to search for a complete engine. Not sure which would be the best option. 1986 951 all stock 170,000 miles Found a small pool of gray oil in one of the cylinder head. Chambers inside the intake manifold are black and a bit oily. Car turns over but no throttle response and no smoke from exhaust. Thanks in advance for any advice. |

I am NOT a mechanic, but do stay at Holiday Inn Express on occasion! That being said.........
I'm not clear if the engine starts and runs, if it does, it's quite possible you don't need a complete rebuild. Get someone to do a leakdown test first. You may just need to have the head refreshed. Assuming you meant the pool of oil is on one of the piston heads, it could be a leaky valve seal or head gasket or both. Has the turbo ever been rebuilt, that could cause the oil/soot in the intake. My car only has ~120K on it, but after I did the head and turbo rebuild, she runs like NEW.

At least do compression and leakdown test to establish state of innards. Worn turbo can leak lots of oil. And intake leaks can cause poor throttle response.
There's a 951 engine for sale somewhere for $1200. If you get it, might as well rebuild it. With the age if these cars, any used motor should be rebuilt anyway, just for the seals alone. Last edited by DannoXYZ; 12-09-2016 at 12:01 AM.. |

Thank you for the suggesting Comeau Racing in San Diego. Does anyone know of a similar place in the San Francisco Bay Area?

170k miles isn't a big deal on the 944 engine.
Might be time for a head gasket/head rebuild along with turbo seals as suggested previously, though. |

Is Tim of Fast Lane in Santa Cruz still around?
EDIT: Found info - Fast Lane Porsche Repair Tim did a emergency radiator repair for me while he still worked at My Porsche-Audi in Monterey. Was able to get back to Laguna Seca overnight. ![]() Last edited by DannoXYZ; 01-22-2017 at 01:08 PM.. |
