Problem with Blinker/High Beams

Recently, my left turn indicator stopped working and my high beams seem to want to engage whenever I drive over a bump. It seems like there may be something wrong with the switch in my steering column. Does anyone have any advice? Hopefully I have articulated my problem clearly... Thanks,

Something is loose in the switch. If you plan to remove and replace the switch yourself, take this advice.

Never, never never turn on the ignition switch when you have the airbag removed. I speak from experience. The airbag idiot light will illuminate until it is reset by someone with the KTS-301 "Bosch Hammer".

R&R Steps:

1. Make sure you have the radio codes for your radio and how to input the codes.

2. Disconnect the battery (-) terminal.

3. Wait 20 minutes for the stored energy to drain in the airbag system.

4. Remove airbag.

5. Front wheels stright ahead.

6. Mark the wheel to shaft indexing.

7. Remove steering wheel.

8. Remove switch cluster with bi-shell switch cover, band type clamp with 10mm hex head on lower right access hole.

9. Disconnect harness connectors.

10. Mark clocking of airbag contact reel.

11. Remove six screws on bi-shell switch cover.

12. Remove contact reel from switch cluster.

13. Assemble in reverse order short of the airbag.

14. Adjust switch level and tighen 10mm hex through hole.

15. Check turnsignal switch and airbag reel for proper lock to lock operation before connecting the battery and installing the battery terminal.

There are several switch clusters used in this vehicle. It depends on the options. You can use the one with all the options and take off the OBC switch and stalk if you have the cruise control but not the OBC.

Options:
M288 = Headlight Washer
M454 = Cruise control (Tempomatic)
M659 = OBC (On-Board Computer) Numeric display in Tachometer

P/N’s
964.613.346.00 (No Options from above)
964.613.345.00 (M659 Only)
964.613.340.00 (M454 & M659)
964.613.339.00 (same as above, not sure of the difference)
964.613.332.01 (M288, M454, M659)

You can find them on ebay once in a while. You can save about $50 to $75 from new.

Keith - Thanks for the instructions. It might be beyond my abilities. Does anyone know if this fix is in Wayne's book?

Thanks,

FDuvall

FDuvall,

I was giving you the full R&R, which is needed whether you are going to repair or R&R the whole switch assembly. It may be something simple in the assembly and external to the switches. It could be a pinched harness that has cut the wires leading from the switch to the signals, and at the same point shorting the high beam wires with a power source.
