Can the Idle Control Valve be mounted vertically?
I have a '95 993 3.6 going into my '71 914-6. The factory installed the Idle Control Valve (see photo of actual valve in case it is called something else) horizontally on top of the motor. In fact, almost all photos I see of this valve show it horizontally. Can it be mounted vertically and still operate? We are trying to keep the top of the motor as clean looking as possible. Thanks for your thoughts.
Cheers, Michael ![]()

I feel like that's a tough call. On just about every factory application across german auto manufacturers it's always mounted horizontal.... The way the unit functions its almost like it's weighted inside which makes me wonder if orientation is important or not. Hopeful someone can chime in with a better answer

My thought might be that it is a solenoid/electrically operated valve, as simple as that. It's orientation shouldn't make a difference to it's operation or function (unless I'm missing something). Could be that it's current position is the optimum space-saving and least obstructive orientation in what is a pretty crammed engine bay.
Try it out, change it's position with temporary fixings (e.g. cable ties) and see if it makes a difference.

Just bench test it in vertical position. If it opens and closes freely (which i am pretty sure is the case) you are good to go.

Agree. When I removed mine and flushed it through with carb/brake cleaner I had it at all sorts of angles cleaning and testing it.

Cool; thank you guys. We will test it in the vertical and see what happens. I appreciate your thoughts.
