I'm recently the owner of a 964 C4 1992 (Engine have 105,000 km) and had before an SC model of 1982.
First I feel that I had more power in the previous 3.0 liters engine. maybe due to the fact that the weight was different. However i'm a bit disapointed by the engine response and after all the trial of doing all the necessary check ups (Distributor Belt, SparkPlugs Timming Injector cleaning and throttle etc...) I still feel the same weak power engine. Is this just afeeling due to the difference in confort between the previous car do you suggest any simple method to check this power failure... Naji-
I also went from an '82 SC to a '91 964 and if you don't find the 964 MUCH more powerful, then either your SC was more than stock or your 964 is not putting out it's rated power. Really.... Good Luck!! -CKrause |

Cant really help with the comparison...
I went from a stock 1987 3.2 to a 1990 3.8 964 and the 964 is WAAAAY faster. I would think you need to get to a Dyno and see wots up. Sure the weight will be an issue but you should not be disappointed by the 3.6... Good luck Mark

Much more you are talking about a 3.2? Well don't froget that the 3.2 was the preparation of these 3.6 engines and all corrections where made here. Good Luck with the best engine flat 6 and air cooled... Naji ![]() |

Naji,
I'll chime in here since I recently had an '81 and '90 at the same time. I just sold the '81 btw. There was a significant difference in power and torque. After driving the '90 for a while, I would drive the '81 and find myself red lining it trying to have the same feel as the '90, not even close. My SC was stock, was yours? Did it have SSI's? Maybe your C4 is a little tired and needs more attention. Just my $.02 worth.

The simplest mechanical probability could be ignition. You may be running on only one distributor.
1. Belt driving the second unit may be shot. 2. One coil could have failed. 3. A coil wire may have died. How about fuel starvation? Filter plugged? Go back to the basics. If it's more complicated, it could turn out to be anything up to the DME control unit. Have you tried replacing the DME relay? Keep at it, you'll find it.

Might be a moot point now - I just made a VERY reasonable offer on an '87 Carrera Targa which has been accepted by the seller. If the inspection and test drive work out, I WILL REALLY NEED TO SELL SOME VEHICLES! Looks like the 944 will go - I just don't drive it as much now that I have become hooked on the 911 Carreras. Tom

Hi Tom,
Here I go again. Remember this is all my own opinion, ymv Interior The full transmission tunnel in the C4 is nicer looking than the small console in the 87. Shorter looking shifter (and throw distance) in C4 is more racer than the 87. Gauge cluster has more warning lights (good or bad?) that light up when started, then quickly disappear (maybe some reassurance in this?) A/C is way better in the C4. In fact in HK where it can be very hot and humid it does an excellent job. My Jap. car is still better but not by much. Everything else is pretty much the same in the interior. Exterior Front and rear bumpers look much nicer on the C4 - more integrated Electric spoiler is nice as you can have both the older 911 style not disturbing the line (spoiler retracted) and yet have the stability and cooling benefit of the spoiler when needed. Less boot space on the C4 More flex on the 87 cab than the C4 Coupe Rest of the body is basically the same. Mechanical Traction in the C4 is awesome. I could easily loose the rear end on the 87 but the C4 just hangs in there. I like the powersteering - I dont feel more detached as some would say. All other mechanicals etc I cant compare because my car is modified thus 3.8ltr blue printed, chipped, MAF, LWF, B&B Stiffer and adjustable suspension BIG red brakes front and rear Brake ducts for cooling Turbo Twist wheels with SO3's Some Italian steering wheel Recaro A8 seats Tower strut brace Nakajima (sp?) stereo with Alpine speakers f&r Clear side markers There's probably more I missing but thats an overview. Clearly the C4 is heavier but the extra power easily makes up for this and then some! I find that I will redline the 87 more often when driving hard. It does feel lighter and more off and on than the C4. The C4 with all its mods, is much more progressive in its power, all the way from idle to redline. I still have a very healthy respect (errr...fear) for the power of the C4 hence why I tend not to be at the redline so much. Just some thoughts. Good luck on your decision. I dont think you can go wrong with the 87 thru to the 993's. They are all awesome cars in their own way and suit different needs. Cheers Mark

The 3.2 carrera had actually felt much faster than a 964C2 or even the 993 C2 when I tried them. This is I suppose only "road feel", it is a very subjective and inaccurate measurement. The older generation 911s are much more direct unfiltered cars. One can just about feel everything on the road. Whereas the 964 and in partcular 993 are much more refined cars. Noise, ride, steering response are all "improved" in such a way that they may actually feel slower. Ever tried go-karting? Doing 30 in a go-kart is like doing 100 in a 993, except much more exciting. I don't think one can judge how much faster or slower a car is by road feel. This can only be judged with any certainty either by direct comparison on track or by the use of some form of measuring device. |

Mark your car is exceptionnal 3.8 and all the other betterment cannot compare with a normal 3.6 anymore. Anyway I would love to see some pictures if displayed over the internet.
Check mine www.geocities.com/asultanem/911.html and 964.html Question ; where is the region you re in? HK? ALIBABA; What you say is true especially the coparision with the cart, and maybe i should measure with some other ways. Thing i might do this week with some other fellows on some Lebanese HighWays (At night when it's more clear , radars and people) |

Perhaps even get a G-tech performance meter, it measures acceleration time, horse power etc. It is not the most accurate device but should give you some idea if the figures should fall way out of the claimed performances. |
