Ash Tray problem?

I have a 1990 cab and the ashtray seems to open and not close very easily. Does anybody know how to fix it? Does it need a new ash tray? I'm talking about the ash tray in front of the stick shift area. It opens and stays open.

I had this exact problem on my 1990 Cab. It was something I just lived with. Maybe you bought my old car!

Are you sure its lined up properly? In the past I have found it necessary to pull it out and reinsert it (mind starts wandering!!!) if it doesnt glide in smoothly. I also find I have to tilt it downwards to line it up (mind continues to wander) and as I slip it in then straighten up (mind now completely on other matters )

There's a small plastic tip that rides in a channel. It needs to be pried back and inserted for the tray to stay up. This is a rather primitive piece and hardly deserves to be there. I wedged mine closed with a bit of hidden cardboard and it's been that way for about four years now. Funny how these simple items become so annoying.

I thought mine was bad for the first few months i owned it, but learned I just wasn't closing it right. I was gently pushing it closed........now i push it closed firmly, and it works every time.

My 92 has the same problem. I've learned to live with it. The tiny piece of plastic that rides in the channel doesn't stay in the channel very well. I'm glad I don't smoke otherwise it would drive me nuts :-)
