engine problems

My boss just bought a 4 wheel drive Porsche 1999. he is in another city and told me that the engine is making what he thought is timing chain noises. I have not seen the car of heard it yet and not familar with porsche but am expected to work on this car. Is there any common problems with this car that i can get ready for or a place I can buy a replacement engine?
Any help would of nice.
Thanks
craig

possibly a rear mainbearing/crank failure?? i just did a quick search on the rennlist 996 board for ' engine failure' . If you pick through them, I am sure you will find a few common problems. search results
