Newbie - Engine and transmissiong fluid change

Hello all,

I recently undertook changing the engine oil and tranmission fluid on my 95 933. A few concerns and questions if you don't mind.

1. How many quarts of oil does the transmission take? I used a gallon of the swepco 201 80/90. I had done a transmission fluid change on a 78 911 awhile back and it took less than the gallon. Normally fluid spews out from the filling hole but I may have had the car jacked up on the right side more than the left.

2. After replacing both oil filters and draining all the oil from the crankcase and the oil reservoir, I started to add the oil, it started backing up (spilling out) on quart number 7. I started the engine for a bit and continued to add oil until I added 10 1/2 quarts. My concern is that I may have added too much oil, the car was raised on all four points and it many not have been leveled (should've paid more attention to this). How do I know the oil level is OK, I checked the dipstick while warm and engine running and it read to the top of the dipstick where the twirly portion stops. I also checked the oil level with a flash light where the oil is added and I can barely see the oil towards the bottom. I also checked it while cold and it looked the same.

My main concern is overfilling, thanks for any help.

FM

The car should be definitely level in the air when filling tranny oil.

The proper way to do an engine oil change requires at most 10 quarts oil if the filters are also removed and replaced for the 993, 964, and earlier 911's. The manual says to add 7 quarts engine oil and warm the car up to operating temp. With car idling (engine running) check the oil level with the dip stick. It is best to top up level between the low and high marks being closer to low than to high. Overfilling will result in a mess as oil gets thrown out through the vent tube into the air cleaner and can foul up your AFS!! Car should also be on level ground when checking the oil level.

you should also add oil slowly since the filler neck is smaller and has more twists and turns in the piping leading to the oil tank than in earlier cars. If you have over filled then remove excess by draining engine sump plug with a rubber plug to temporarily stop the gush of oil when you have let out enough and replace the gasket seal. Or if you have a clean vacuum suction tool (long clear tube to draw out the oil from the tank).

You should be fine.

993 normally takes around 4 quarts of gear oil

Your oil should be fine as well - it is normall for them to start backing up around 6 - 8 quarts in, then start, then top off with the rest to bring it to 10 quarts. Run the motor until it is hot, then top off to correct level on the dipstick.

Thank you for the help and insight... I'll check the oil level to make sure it's not over. Next time I'll make sure the car is level!!

One mistake I made when emptying out the crankcase oil was that I unbolted the oil pump drain plug and a spring came out along with the drain plug. Any problems with me doing that... I later realized it wasn't the crankcase drain plug.

That is the oil pressure relief valve.

Did you get everything back in place and tightened properly.

Stop driving IMMEDIATELY if you start to notice any drivability issues or strange fluctuations in your oil pressure level.

AFJuvat,

Yes I did get everything back in, at first the drain plug, along with a hollow stud/tube and a long spring came off. While under the car and moving around the area, a small hollow tube fell off on its own. I guessed at the orientation since I figured the spring had to go inside of it.

I've driven the car and the oil pressure drops when idling at a stop sign but goes up to close to 5 while driving around 4K - 5K RMPs

I hope everything is well.

Sounds like everything should be fine.

Just keep a close eye on it for a while.
