Replacing my ignition from my 3.6T & EFi help

Hi
My EZ ignition controller has gone bust and cost over $2000 from porsche to replace- its a one of year for my '94 Turbo and it just sends a signal to my coil, with inputs from the flyhweel sensor and also manifold pressure & temp to retard the timing etc etc...

I am currently going to go for an EFi conversion done by myself and starting out with megasquirt first to learn the ropes and may upgrade down the line. I was only planning to replace the fuel from CIS to electronic but now my EZ is gone im looking into ways of replacing this for something better and cheaper!

I have done a few searches and have small amount of experience so far with iginitions - i think i understand you could replace this EZ signal with maybe MSnS, or also replace the distributor with a DIS instead- ford maybe?

Ive seen XDi and MSD as well but not sure how they could fit into my solution.

If anyone could explain a few things to me and talk to me like i was born yesterday that would help

Cheers!

Unfortunately, I've never seen a good replacement for them. the 94 3.6 turbo was really the first CIS car porsche made with computer controlled timing. As such parts are rather unique and very expensive.

You could, in theory, backdate the car to the earlier turbo ignition system. I know the 930 3.3 injection system bolts on to the 3.6. The euro 3.3 was a distinct improvement over the USA version of the 3.6 injection system.

Sorry, couldn't be of more help.

Thanks for the response. Its a tricky one with a one year speical. I dont think I can backdate as all the boost retard etc will be lost. I have just seen some efi conversions and people use distributorless type controls.. just thought somepeople might know of this setup.

I just got done installing a Megasquirt unit from TBitz racing on my 2.7L turbo. I am using full MSD(w/timing retard) and Pertronix ignitor. The install was fairly simple and seems to run well.

I would love to do this someday to a 3.6 motor.

Thanks
Oscar

Cool! Can you give me anymore details where you can get the ignition sutff- I am thinking now of getting MS to do the ignition first but need all the bits and peices to work. Does MS control timing & dwell on boost, etc

Congrats on the conversion must be very satisfying!
