Strongest stock C4...

I've got a couple options for building up a fast street car, i've got a $20,000 budget for upgrades on either an 3.6 ltr air-cooled 993 non vram motor and a 2002 3.6 996, i have both motors to build up from, and i'm interested in a C4, it'll have loads of torque. My question is this:

Which generation is the strongest drive train C4

They're both nice. As Steve W. has always pointed out, regearing the trans will be more productive than doing engine work.

With that in mind the 993 trans has more options than the 996.

Strength, I don't know

What I find questionable is that rebuild parts are not generally available for the G96 trans used in 996. If there is a problem they are replaced as a unit, not rebuilt.
