964: I can't change into 1st,2nd or reverse !

Has anybody seen this before ? For some reason my 964 C2 stopped allowing me to select 1st, 2nd and reverse. Just worried it's a gearbox rebuild job. I press hard against the lever but it just won't budge to select them. Seems worse when cold.
Thanks,
Dom

But you can select the other gears? Weird.

Drain the fluid and see if bits of metal come out.

Check the linkage and make sure nothing is binding there.

Thanks Kang I'll take a look. I meant to say it's worse when the engine is warm.

If anybody else gets this problem then it could be just your clutch. That's what mine appears to be. Will let you know.

What year and maybe Dual Mass Flywheel is problem as well. Always try fixing the cheapest and simplest parts of the system first before tearing into the gearbox. The slave cylinder of the clutch should have seen periodic fluid change when bleeding the brakes during biannual service change. Otherwise a sticking slave clutch unit will lead to difficult engagement of gears. Most likely to be your problem.

Thanks tshih, I am sorry to say you were right. It needed a new clutch and Dual Mass Flywheel too.
Still nothing is too much trouble to keep such a beauty roadworthy!

masterdom,

Good luck with it, should be fine after new LuK DM flywheel. While it's engine is out does the cylinder head need upgrading to accept sealing gaskets prone to leak in 1990-1992 year 964's?
