crank sensor
Can anyone tell me what a crank sensor is and where it is located? How critical are they? 1995 993.

“Very important” is an understatement. Critical is more like it. It tells the ECU where the engine is, in terms of rotation, at any given moment. The ECU uses this info to know when to fire the spark plugs, among other things. If this sensor is off, and the plugs fire at the wrong time, well you get the idea.
